Depends on your age...... if your old enough to endulge in alcohol, the best thing I found when I had an open nerve was whiskey.... warm whiskey swished around my mouth and it numbed the pain until I could get to see the dentist.... NO, I didn't drink the whiskey... or I might never have made the appointment, lol

Advil seemed to work the best for me. My dentist recommended upping the dosage to 3 until I could see him. But, no more often than recommended and not for too long...

DON'T put aspirin on the tooth. It will feel better for awhile, but the nerve will soon become irritated and burned and it will HURT!!! OraJel or something like that from the drugstore can help somewhat...

If you just lost a filling or something, you can buy a temporary filling wax or putty. If it's a problem that slowly got worse, it's probably infected and that's why it hurts. Covering it may just make things worse...

Don't do anything excessively that could irritate the nerve...

In addition to using the pain medication of your choice, sleep on an extra pillow to elevate your head. Sleep on the side that does NOT have a toothache. If that doesn't work, you can move to a recliner or the sofa so you can keep your head really elevated. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain. This might help you make it through the night until you can see a dentist.

You need to see a dentist...I had this and the only thing that helped was vicodin until I could get a root cana(I was put on a waiting list!!) He can at least prescribe something for you until you can go in for the procedure...

EDIT: By the way...some of the previous answers say ice or something cold...this is probably the worst thing for your tooth...It will honestly hurt worst than anything else. Also Oragel will not work either...the pain is in the root which is only partially exposed...it cannot reach to completely numb the root..

Well, cloves help but so does cocaine mixed with baking soda. LOL! Try some stuff they sell at the local pharmacy that is used to fill in open teeth like yours. It is like a temporary filling until you can go to see the dentist. Or, if you cannot do that, get some candle wax and pack it in your tooth as tightly as you can and keep replacing it when you need to and eat and chew with the opposite side of your mouth. Good luck. Been there, done that. Ouch. I don't envy you. Good luck.

Your local Drug store should carry a temporary tooth cement product. Go and talk to the Pharmacist and tell 'em you've got pain!! My hubby broke a tooth in half and used it. works wonders. Don't hesitate about the Dentist, tooth problems can turn into infetions really quickly and are very dangerous!!!!!!!!!! Good luck and feel better :-)

my boyfriend has this condition as we speak.
he uses orabase which is a tube of stuff you can put in the hole
there is also a putty you can purchase that fills the hole it lasts longer than ora base but, because the nerve is exposed it may hurt. I would buy both (you can get at wal-mart or walgreens) and see which one works better for you! Good luck! See your dentisit asap so it doesn;t become absesed!

Either Ambesol, found in any drugstore, or let an aspirin such as Bayer, not a Tylenol, dissolve onto the tooth. Tooth pain really sucks, good luck.

Chew on cloves or put some cotton wool with clove oil on. It really works quite well and is a good natural version of novacaine i.e anaesthetic.
