If you are referring to a young horse ( say, a 2 year old) that is just begining its racing career, then the horse is called a maiden, regardless of gender. When a horse wins its first race, that is referred to as "breaking his/her maiden" by horsepeople. Hope this helps.

There are so many of them! If you have access to a newspaper that gives entries for a nearby racetrack, all you have to do is look at the entries for any maiden race. None of the horses in that race has won a race, although at the end of the day, one of them will have.

Swing On, the dam of champion Seabiscuit, was unraced, and thus never won a race.

"Hit The Silks" has no wins to my knowledge! He's a California horse. There are thousands of horses that have no wins, but you never hear about them because they are traded, sold, retired, etc! Many become the horses that end up ponying the other race horses to the starting line!

there was one racehorse that was notorious for never having won a race(ran 100 times, with no wins, 8 seconds and 12 thirds) and ran for a number of years...look up 'Zippy Chippy' and some interesting information will come up (like how he ran against a human, and raced against a harness racer (standardbred))...and when you catagorize them as not having won a race, the horses are referred to as 'maidens'...
