Please ignore Clive H suggestion to use SAVLON. This contains Chlorhexidene which should NOT be used on /in ears & eyes. (it is ototoxic ie toxic to the auditory nerve and cochlea)
This warning is on the Savlon packaging)
An old fashioned but effective treatment is to inhale steam ( water vapor) by pouring some very hot water into a bowl and breathing in the vapor with a towel over your head.
You should see a Doctor or Nurse asap and get professional advice if you have a potential ear infection.

Definately sounds like an ear infection to me, I had one four months ago which resulted in 2 perforated eardrums (excrutiating pain!) I also suffered from lack of hearing and everything sounded quite muffled and blurred and really quite quiet. My advice is get to the doctors straight away! I can't stress this enough, They'll give you some antibiotics and you should start to feel better within days!

A lot of times a cold puts pressure on the ear making it seem like you have an ear infection. A lot of people take a hot wash cloth and put it on there ear they say it works.

You can try the non-prescribed ear drops, see if they work. Alternatively, try a tube of Savlon; put some on a piece of cotton wool and put it in the ear as far in as possible.

If the condition gets worse over the next few [five] days, go and see the quack!

I think you may need an antibiotic, if it IS an ear infection.
30 years ago, I got an ear infection two days before I got married; didn't have time to go to doc; got by on painkillers, and flew out on honeymoon later that evening. I have lost 70 per cent of the hearing in that ear because of that one neglected infection.
Now I have to see an ENT specialist about getting grommets in both ears - at MY age, to try and drain out my ears to restore my hearing.

don't wait more than a day or two before seeing the doc.

No. You must get to the doctor. Middle ear infections can be ongoing for a length of time before the symptoms of the earache show up while in the beginning stages, otitis media causes pneumonia. You sound to me like you have pneumonia and you need to get to a doctor, pronto!

Take an antihistamine a couple times a day and put a heating pad on your ear. If its not better in 24 hrs, go to the doctor.

It may be your ear or a swollen gland. Both, of course can occur with a cold - I have a doozy right now! If it continues for more then a day call your doctor - feel better !

It does sound like an ear infection and if in fact it is, the only thing that will help it is antibiotics which are only available by prescription.
