One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. If cut into 6" layers it will cover 54 square feet. 600 divided by 54 = 11.11 yards. A yard of sand weighs 4,400 pounds, so 11.11 yards would be 48,884 pounds, or 24.442 tons.

300 cubic feet.
6" is 1/2 a foot
600 sq ft * 1/2 ft = 300 cubic feet.
To convert to cubic yards, divide that by 27, which is 11.11 cubic yards (you should probably order at least 12 yards of sand to be on the safe side).

calculate the volume of sand required:
600*6/12 = 300 cubic feet of sand.
300/27 = 11.1111....cubic yards
If you assume that sand weighs in the order of 110 lbs/ft^3 then you nee 300*110 = 33,000 lbs or 16.5 tons of sand

length x width x depth
600 = length x width
depth is 6" = 1/2 '
300 cubic ft
sand is often sold by the yard (cubic yard)
1 yard = 27 cu ft
300/27=11.2 yards or 11 1/2 allowing for loss

You're calculating volume, which is length*width*height.
V = 600 sq ft*.5 ft = 300 ft^3
