God had Jesus crucified so God could give himself an excuse to forgive humanity its sins.

Jesus allowed himself to be crucified because he knew he was the Son of God and that God would raise him from the dead and take him to heaven where he would be praised for all of eternity.

So what, exactly, was sacrificed?

Jesus had no wife, no kids, no home or possessions, no money, no equals to call friends. He was only here to be crucified so God could give Himself an excuse to forgive humanity, which God could have done anytime He wished without Jesus being on a cross (after all, God can do anything He wants).

So what was Jesus losing that had any value whatsoever? Giving up his life to spend eternity with God would be like you giving up a quarter and getting a mansion in return.

Just because you value your life doesn't mean the Son of God thought being human was anything of value, and how often in his sermons did he say just that (Matthew 16:25)?

Orion, that's quite a beautiful child on your lap. What if I told you that, unless you agreed to be beaten and crucified, this child would be condemned to death? Be honest -- how would you feel?

Anger? Fear?

What makes you think Jesus didn't also feel these emotions? Remember, He was also fully human in addition to being God. It's a natural instinct to want to preserve our own lives. Despite what fictional books would have us believe, not too many folks are willing to be stripped naked, beaten brutally, nailed to a cross and die of blood loss and asphixiation. It's just not something most folks jump at the chance to do, whether their children's lives are at stake or not.

So what did Jesus lose that had value? HIS LIFE. The fact that He was resurrected after 3 days doesn't negate the excruciating punishment He endured for us!

God decreed from the beginning that sinners will die. However, as prophesied at Isaiah 53, God also promised that a Messiah would come to bear the sins of humankind. It's THAT Person who would receive the penalty we all deserve. That Person is Jesus Christ.

The whole notion that baby's go to heaven is a little shaky. Some sectors believe it while others do not. There really is not much in the Bible that really helps us to understand what happens when a person who does not have the cognitive ability to understand the gospel dies. The only text that I know people point to is the one in 2 Samuel where David stops weeping when his child dies. When he stops weeping he says, "I can go to him, but he cannot return to me." Most people take this as a tacit explanation that he will be with the child in heaven. However, at the same time, it could just be a reference to Hades (the after-life). We are not sure and I personally feel it is a little bit presumptuous to make the claim. However, I would say the issue about abortion is more serious from a Christian worldview. Abortion is intentionally killing a person, which violates one of the Ten Commandments. While some people will justify abortion by calling it a right to protect one's body, one must ask if the member's of our society (babies in the womb) who do not have any status or say do not also have the right to life. I would argue that we all have such a claim to life, including those in the womb. Thus, I do not merely see abortion as usurping God's authority only, I see it as violating one of the basic commandments.

dear friend I don't know if you are confused or being aggressive. but your conclusions are just pieces of the whole story. Here again is an example of literalism, where spiritual understanding is required. first of all, GOD gave us HIS only son. read the story of Abraham, it is one you should read. then You have to understand what it was for GOD to become a man. For the unseen worlds and angels to witness this, even satan, they all marveled at this miracle that was the greatest of all HIS miracles. And then to understand that JESUS laid down HIS divine power to live as we do, and once again the miracle of it all is seen. HE WAS TEMPTED IN ALL POINTS AS WE ARE YET DID NOT SIN...this was done so HE would not have an advantage over us. and HE didn't, HE didn't even know if HIS life was perfect enough to make the trip to the cross worth it. but HE DID IT ANYWAY. at any cost to HIMSELF. read about the Garden of Gethsemane. so these are some of the wide gaps in your conclusion. I hope it moves you to read more of what THE WORD OF GOD has for you. I also want to add that GOD didn't need an excuse to forgive us HE created the whole system in order to forgive us. read about the sanctuary system HE gave to moses and the jews. one more point, that GOD and HIS character were what was on trial, along with HIS law. JESUS came to uphold the law and reveal HIS FATHER to all of us. now we are asked to be witnesses like JESUS has shown to reveal GOD'S character.

In all reality, Jesus should have been VERY enthusiastic about dying, since he came from heaven down to THIS place, and he knew the quickest way back was to be killed. There is NO sacrifice here. It's like turning in the rented Moped the insurance company gave you while your next year's model Mercedes was in the shop. Giving back the rental is NOT a sacrifice.

It wasnot an excuse to forgive everyone for their sins. It was then that Jesus took the sins of the world upon Himself. all past present and future and therefore at the time of His death all sins had been paid for. It was also to show us all that if we lived according to God's rules that there is an afterlife and when He says we will be resurrected and our bodies made perfect He showed us with Jesus that it was true. Only Thank You Lord we only have to answer for our own sins not the sins of an entire world. What did Jesus loose, He had to suffer the pain of all those sins while dying on the cross. He lost His innocence. He allowed Himself to die that way for the good of all humanity. The sad part is when humanity spits in His face in return with false allegations. Reread the scriptures involving The death and ressurrection of Christ. See if you can learn the truth. may God give you the wisdom to understand

Congradulations on your reasoning ability but, you leave out a few details.

The big bully on the block or the richest man in town CAN do anything he wants. True. Though if he has a sense of Justice, Righteousness, Fairness--he doesn't exercise that ability.

The Bible shows there were other issues in play. Keep in mind, Jesus had a hand in making us. The Bible shows God made everything through him. He had a personal stake in man.

The issues of God's right to rule His creations and the other issue Satan raised of man only worshipping God because of what we could GET out of God not out of personal desire and respect. God has allowed time for these issues to be settled.

Jehovah would not allow mankind to be left hanging out to dry. His sense of Justice provided a way out for Adam's children. It is a fact children suffer for the misdeeds of their parents. We see it every day. We can compensate.

A perfect man, Adam, got us into this mess; only a perfect man could get us out. No one of both human parents could do this because of the same defect from Adam. Jesus could. To be human, he must have one human parent. Due to previous promises to his faithful people, Jesus was born in the family line of David.

Jesus could not have wife or kids and he was blameless of any sin (Adam's or otherwise). When Adam got us into the mess, he had not had children. If he had, the child would have been perfect and we would not be in the fix we are today.

That did not happen . Adam was perfect at the time so for balance, Jesus had to be the same way. After ressurection, he presented the value of his perfect human life to his Father. The scales were balanced. They made a way for humankind to be able to return to perfection; to God's original purpose.

Keep in mind too, Jesus wasn't to wild about this torturous death thing. In the garden, before he was arrested, he prayed at least 3 times recorded in the Bible, for God to find a "loophole". He fully realized the importance of doing his Father's will and more than anything, he would do just that. It was just any sane man would hesitate to do it THAT way.

He could have said NO at any point, even while in heaven before coming. The Bible showed he loved mankind and his Father. That is why he did it.

Jesus was God in the flesh come down to live among men to be the perfect sacrifice for us all. Back in Bible times they had to make an animal sacrifice before Jesus came. Since Jesus was a perfect lamb free from any and all sin He took on the sins of the world. God loved us enough that He let Jesus be crucified and be that living final sacrifice for us all so that we, through the blood of Jesus, could be saved without having to build an alter and make the animal sacrifices of old. All we have to do now is ask the Lord to forgive us of our sins and live for Him. Jesus valued His life and God valued His life. But God knew us human's would need a sacrifice in order for us to be forgiven.

This is another one of those biblical conundrums that is tricky to explain away, as is evidenced by some of the answers above. When people ignore the essence of the question and dish out a canned response it actually does the religion they're trying to defend a disservice.

This is a thought provoking question people, so THINK. And it's okay to say "hummm.... I'm not really sure"; that doesn't make you less faithful.

Of course, the fact that He was human, and felt pain and agony beyond description is not part of what you want to discuss, right? Okay, so lets just ignore the pain part, shall we? Fits much better into your little rant anyway. If you don't believe, fine. Why even come here just to post this nonsense anyway? I'm not trying to convert you, I don't believe in trying to convert people, so why come here with these silly rants? It's not logical or rational. You're doing the exact same thing so many non-believers accuse christians of doing, trying to convert them. I'm sure you feel justified, your type always do, but please understand that we're not idiots, we see this for exactly what it is, you being the pot that calls the kettle black.
