Patrician, I'm not giving them any attention - I live in Greece and I had never even heard of them before today. My question is genuine, I honestly didn't know if it was a wind up nor not.

I can't describe my anger at what I saw, surely the American authorites can stop these people from turning up at funerals. I felt so sorry for the poor kids, who didn't even know what their banners said, they are clearly brainwashed, and their safety is put as risk from angry passers by who throw things etc.. Surely these kids should be taken into care? It's a clear case of child abuse!! AGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!

As a Kansan I want to thank all posters for not bringing up the fact that the church is based in Topeka, Kansas.

We find them as distasteful as the rest of you.

Its real....real sad! As a person who has had at least one close family member in every conflict the US has been in WWI on I am also angered by what these stupid people do.

We can turn the tide. Be willing to stand up when there is a funeral that they are going to picket. There are groups that go out and form a human shield for the families.

I believe in the three fold law what we send out into the world comes back to use times three be it good or bad. I like to hope that these people will eventually receive what they deserve. Times three!

The attached link is for a website that has interviews with family members who left the abusive cult. Their stories are terrifying, and I have also read other articles by the ones who escaped from their father's control.

The latest thing is that they are now saying that God sent the tornadoes to Kansas as a means of punishing the people for laughing at the Westboro gang and their church.

These people are bad news. The head of the family, Fred Phelps, abused his wife, abused his children, and even is believed to have murdered one of his sons girlfriends. They terrorize the citizens of Topeka, including the mayor, and believe they are the only ones going to heaven (go figure). They harrass grieving families with hateful messages, and seem to enjoy hurting others-they show very little concern for the feelings of others. It's easy to see why they're hated, and they should be.

Yes, there is a catch. There are at least 12 lawyers just within the family. They make good money suing cities for lack of police protection when they protest and get bottles thrown at them. That is why they are more and more vile in who and where they protest. It works to their advantage.

In other words, the reaction Joe D gave is what they want.

I have seen the websites, and I have signed a petition against them protesting at the VTech shooting victims' funerals. I don't know any more than that, but if they are "for real" I really hope they get their Karma. They are more prejudiced than some people on Y!A and that's just scary.

Simple: They are brainwashed Christians, though they do take it to the extreme, but in general, Christians do think homosexuality is wrong, & they do getting political and they are trying to get marriage to be illegal or band for gays/lesbians, or that no gay/lesbian should raise a child in their house hold either, for the fear the child would turn out gay/lesbian, or be abused, or not taken care of....ect.

To me, there is no difference between a loud christian (Westboro) and a quiet Christian (the Christians who get political); both will try to tell you your wrong, and try to tell you how to live your life, and there still brainwashed Christians.

I was born free, I'll die free.

That is, unfortunately; the down side to free speech. Psychos like that can get away with all of the stuff they do. They can keep them at a distance, but they cannot silence them.... even though what they are doing is clearly wrong.

They are real, I believe the entire church is related to one another. They are mentally ill. I suppose the 'freedom of speech' amendment in the US Constitution has kept them form being arrested.
