Three questions here. I'm going to be blunt:

1. This is a small house, and the cats' poop is real stinky. It smells terrible when they go, worse than anything a human being can produce.

2. Cat litter is that scoop away stuff --- any way of deoderizing it even more? How often does the entire litter pan need to be changed?

3. Kitty number two seems to have a problem with passing gas. Any suggestions on how to cut down on the offensive odor?

--- Thank you very much for any help on my questions.

I used to live in a small townhouse, about 1000 sq feet, when I got my three cats. I only had one litter box for all three downstairs in the half bathroom so I used Arm and Hammer litter. It works pretty well, better than Scoop Away. You do have to scoop the litter box everyday or the house will smell. I do it once every morning. Also, once a week, I empty the litter box, wash it with soap and water, dry it and put clean litter in. My house never smells.

Also, what brand of food are you feeding your cats? My cats never pass gas. I feed them California Natural, Felidae, Solid Gold, Innova, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul and Wysong. These aren't sold at supermarkets or Petco, Petsmart etc. You would have to do some research to find a store near your home that sells these brands. They cost a little more than Purina and the other so called gourmet cat foods but the quality of the ingredients and ingredients themselves are much better. In the long run, they will save money in vet bills related to food allergies and other diseases caused by poor quality cat foods like Purina, Iams, Eukenuba etc.

1. Yup, it can be awful, especially with young cats.

2. Try out different brands of coagulating cat litter, some brands will hold in the smell better than others. You can get sprays and powers to mix with the cat litter that minimizes bad smell. I do this combined with a certain brand of litter and I have no smell in my home.

I scoop out litter once a day, change the whole thing once a week and wash the pan before adding in new litter.

3. Make sure that the cats are not eating new types of food/snacks every day. Try to stick to one kind of food. If you're already doing this, you can try changing the food you're currently using (make sure to introduce the new food over a matter of days).

It all has to do with the quality of the food you feed. I recommend an all natural brand of cat food like #1. Wellness 2. Nutro Natural Choice 3. Holistic.

These foods will help with the stinky poop, and things like skin & coat. It has enriched vitamines that cats are suppose to have.

You can also try a kitty litter with baking soda which helps cover the oder more.

Good luck!

My apartment is less than 500 square feet, so I feel your pain!My kitty's poop was incredibly stinky, and I switched to Fresh Step clumping litter with carbon crystals. It smells soooooooo much better. I think my kitty likes it better too...she covers up her poop more thoroughly.

I don't have a suggestion on the gas. I've known dogs with that problem, but not cats.

I have 3 and I like them. They stay indoors and although the older two don't like to come up stairs (they were taken in by us when their owner died and they don't like dogs), Roxie is a totally different story. She doesn't know what she is, cat or dog and loves it up and downstairs. She gets away with everything and is totally spoiled. She doesn't get to do more than swat at moths on the window or stare at birds through the windows. We call that kitty TV. And, all are spayed or neutered. And they contribute to the happiness of this old broad.

I use Arm&Hammer baking soda clumping kitty litter. The baking soda absorbs other odors too.

If you strain out the clumbs every day, in theory you'll never need to change out the whole box.

What I do is throw the poop away as soon as they do it. It sounds too much, but you get used to it. And my cat is also used to its litterbox being clean, and he waits for me to go poop! So I don't let them bury them and mix them up and make the sand stink, I just throw the poop awa right away, as soon as I hear him dig!

Kittens have the worst smelling poop and farts. All most eye watering. It will pass with age. (Hopefully you won't pass out first though)I don't know why they are like that but almost all of them are.
