Just some friends getting together and doing tattoos. I'm not licensed or charging anyone. I live in South Carolina. Does anyone know if I could get in trouble for doing this?

If you can do them, and your friends and family are consenting, then go ahead. Since your not charging, its not illegal. My fiance has five great tattoos, and they were done by a guy that does them for free for friends and family. I got mine by my uncle, who does them free for family, but hes a professional. Mine looks great, but you cant tell by looking at both of us who got them pro and amatuer. Just make sure they want you to do it, and no hard feelings will be pressed if its a little off. Have fun.

Perfect your craft before you start throwing tattoo parties. Every artist has to start somewhere but this is not the way to get practice. Take an apprenticeship and become a licensed artist if you have a passion for inking. Besides you know you don't own the proper equipment for sterilization. Do you really want your friends and families ultimate health risks in your hands??? HIV/AIDS is only one of the many infectious diseases you can pass between people if you are an amateur. Getting in trouble legally is not what you should be worried about. Ethics regarding the safety of a client is.

well its not illegal, however, you are risking a lot... Im assuming you do not have access to an autoclave, and therefore the procedure will probably not be completely sterile... which is a big problem. If one of your friends or family members develops cellulitis or gangrene because of this (and trust me, the chances are of it happening are very high) you could possibly then face a legal battle (get sued) for expensive medical treatment, not to mention losing the trust of someone close and watching them suffer a nasty infection. I am a nurse and Ive actually seen 3 or 4 cases of very infected tattoos, one resulting in an amputation.

Probably not with the law, you're not charging and you aren't running a business, so the IRS isn't going to charge you taxes on money your not making in a business.

Anyway, make sure that everything is clean and the area of the skin you are tattooing. HIV/AIDS can be transmitted through the needles, so can Hepatitis, so be extra careful. Other than that, you should be fine.

Free tattoos......now that's a scary thought. If you want these people to remain your friends do not tattoo them......What? Do you do dental work too? Maybe a few abortions on the side?.....No? Then why the @#%$ are you doing tattoos. This is an invasive procedure and you CAN go to jail if something goes wrong and charges are filed against you. Personally if you tattooed one of my family members and they got a serious infection.....Jail would be the least of your problems..... If you want to give your friends and family tattooes.....Take them to a professional.

Rider (inked by a professional, not by some HIV infected tattoo party throwing moron)

Maybe...

Do you know how to sterilize the area? Do you know what kind of inks to use that won't cause infections or reactions? Do you know how to calm a nervous person when you're causing them all that pain? Do you know how to treat an infection if it happens? Do you know how to stop excessive bleeding? Can you draw well enough that you won't make a mistake, and make that rose look more like Uncle Ross? Can you spell really, really well, so you don't put "Love Forver" instead of "Love Forever"?

I don't believe you can get into trouble for it. However tatoos are for life and should always be done by proffessionals who know what they are doing what will you do if you infect them? and you are sure to do a bad job.
