Two companies were asked to compete for X-35 series aircraft Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics.
On the end of the competition Lockheed Martin's craft was declared best and renumbered in USAF as F-35.

* yes i agree, Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor
Lockheed Martin bought General Dynamics/GD (GD made the F16) before the final winner of JSF was announced

* I think several sub-contractors participate the JSF, including BAe (British Aerospace), I think about 2-4 european aircraft makers participated.

* from the start i know Boeing's Phantom Works X-32 looks like a loser, the "under the nose" air intakes looks like an A-7 with a happy face (Sorry Boeing). Although X-32's nose and front fuselage plus the variable chamber looks impressive, looks like a complex aerodynamics & structure design. Near deadline, Boeing also changes the rear configuration of X-32, which in turn makes X-32 more maneuverable, but less stealthy, but also show that... looks like Boeing couldn't make up their mind on designing the JSF (Again, sorry Boeing).

Yes Lockheed Martin was selected.
General Dynamics did not merge with Lockheed they are a seperate organization Martin Marietta merged in the 1990's with Lockheed.
