I have feed birds for some time now and I just put out extra for the squirrel. When I put bread out, he pretty much leaves the feeders alone.

After battling this issue for some time, I finally gave in, spent the extra money and bought a squirrel proof feeder. There are many styles to choose from. The squirrels still try but they no longer are able to empty the thing daily. Same issue with raccoons.

If you have a bird feeder on a pole or post this can be pretty effective: apply a coat of petroleum jelly to the pole or post that your bird house or feeder resides on. Squirrels won't be able to climb the pole or post.
