Visa, MasterCard, and Discover bank cards have 16 digits(4 sets of 4). American Express is the oddball, with only 15 digits.
Some store cards(for department stores, gas stations, jewelry stores, etc) have less than 16 digits. For example, my Shell credit card has only 12. But this only applies to store cards that do not have a Visa or MasterCard logo on them.

All visas start with a 4
All mc start with 5
All discover start with 6
AMEX have 15 numbers and all start with a 3
All cards when you add up the numbers total to a very specific number, which is how banks tell if the card number is legit.
