What kind of bird and why did you kill it?

Killing just because is reprehensible. If you aren't going to eat it, or if it isn't in an act of self defense or depredation then don't kill it.

But the reason that it clung to the tree is because how a birds feet work. The toes flare out when the legs are straight and clamp down when the legs are bent. This isn't so much of a muscular control action as it is a function of the ligaments running through the lower leg and into the toes. When the leg is straight the ligaments are relaxed (there are also counter reactive ligaments that pull the toes open and spread to assist in this). When the leg is bent the ligaments are pulled tight and this curls the toes (the counter reactive ligaments that spread the toes are relaxed at this point).

This is a survival trait that allows a bird to remain perched without having to exert any muscular control, it lands and bends its legs into a squatting position thus holding it to the perch. This is also why birds of prey have such powerful talons. The leverage of the ligaments in their legs gives them great power directly to their feet to hold prey.

Sounds like a woodpecker. If you shot one in Illinois and got caught, it would be a hefty fine. Yep, woodpeckers make noise.

So if you were making noise, would a neighbor be ok with shooting at you. That bird wasn't a game bird, you probably have no license, sounds like the gun used was a BB gun and quit possibly you are too young to have a BB gun or any gun. You will have to do alot of learning and growing up before you ever touch a firearm.

Don't be shooting birds because you feel like it.

You have a sacred obligation to respect and watch over nature. Only when you have a reason do you kill, for food, to protect from vermin, predators, etc. Don't ever take this lightly.

be careful what you shoot. if someone from the dept of fish and game discovers youre shooting birds out of season, you could be faced with jail time and plenty of fines. So it isnt a good idea to shoot one "just because it was making noise". Game Wardens dont cut breaks.

In the future stick to shooting crows. Those little songbirds never hurt anyone just scare them away some how. Plus by shooting crows you are actually helping your enviroment (their nest robbers).
