police usually ride close behind so that can read your license plate and run it through their computers to make sure you have insurance, your not driving a reported stolen vehicle, or if their is a warrant for the car owner. there is a lot of information they can get from your tag about you.
Personally i drive the same speed they do b/c i doubt they will pull me over when they seem to always be in a hurry.

I taught ONE cop not to do that. He was so close I couldn't see his headlights in my rearview mirror. So, as I do to ANY tailgater, I hit my brakes. LOL, He slammed on his brakes, scared the snot outta him. He hit his lights, and I immediately dialed the state police and had the phone on speaker. He pulled me over and all I said was, "Didn't you see that dog? He ran right out in front of me. Maybe if you hadn't been so close you would have." He tried to get smart, "No matter how close I follow, YOU respect me. I am God on this road." , I held the phone up and asked the dispatcher if she'd heard enough. All she said was, "Unit ##, Return to the station." Thanked me for my time and hung up.
If a cop gets behind you, just continue to drive, stay RIGHT at the speed limit and don't worry about him. If you're legal you have nothing to worry about, unless he hits you. If he hits you, he's wrong. Try to get his car number, then when you can stop, call in and report him for unsafe driving.

Because they probably want to have a little fun, or they have a quota to meet and they are looking for a reason to stop you. I always just try to turn off at a gas station or a store.

I think they get bored and need something to kill time. Plus, the ones who do that are usually big jerks.
