what kind of jam?
anyway, if there is no jam forthcoming...
A couple of years ago i was in Lyndhurst in Hampshire and i went to a sweetshop - there probably only is one - so you know who you are. I asked for a quarter (pound) of wine gums (weighed on scales and served in a bag) and the young person behind the counter said he couldn't sell me a quarter of wine gums, it had to be metric.
At the time I was at a loss of what to do other than ask for 113 grams of wine gums (the only thing you buy in grams as far as I'm concerned is cocaine).
I should point out I would be equally upset if I went into a shop and asked for 100 grams of wine gums and was told I had to have 4 ounces or something.
Just what is the problem with people? Why are people being prosecuted for this?? It s ridiculous.
Incidentally this has nothing to do with an EU directive - that wasn't due to become law until 2009 and has since been modified.

Potato...potarto. Tomato...tomarto.
You say petro, I say gas. You say silly, I agree yes.
But the advantage to the metric system is that all increments are easy to remeber whether it be distance, area, volumn or weight. Let's compare
1 mile = 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet = 63,360 inches vs
1 kilometer = 1,000 meters = 1,000,000 millimeters.
Now for weight
1 imperial ton = 20 hundredweight = 160 stones = 2,240 lbs = 35,840 ozs vs
1 metric ton = 1,000 kilograms = 1,000,000 grams
Now for areas
1 sq mile = 640 acres = 3,097,600 sq yards = 27,878,400 sq feet vs
1 sq kilometer = 1,000,000 sq meters = 1,000,000,000,000 sq millimeters
Just ask a 6 year old of any gender or race and see what their preference would be if they can decide which to learn in school.
P.S. May be if all packaging standards are in metric, we'll finally be able to solve the riddle between the 10 pieces hot dogs and 8 pieces buns. LOL.

I agree totally with you. We brew our own wine and beer and when looking for recipes they are mixed up with some saying litres and others pints. Why did we have to swap from imperial to metric anyway. By the way there are a lot of people on here who wont know that there was anything but metric as they are too young! Bring back pounds and ounces, inches and feet thats what I say.

Totally agree, it's all bollocks.
I know some people prefer the metric system, but surely it is about how you judge things. If someone asks me, for example, how far away a place is I would automatically give the answer in imperial measurements. I'm fortunate enough to know the formulae for converting imperial into metric, but the point is that I find it easier to judge things in yards instead of metres, and so on.

Hi Bob,
i mix and match all the time.
so long as i can still order a pint of beer i'm happy with it.
At soem stage in the next thousand years we will probably have to change, so why not now.
It still takes me 10 hours to cut the grass, i dont; care if its 2 acres or 1 hectare.

No, I don't want 454g of jam, I would like 500g. The sooner the UK and the US metricate, rather than use conversions from obsolescent units the better.
It is right that Britain should not be forced by the EU to metricate. It is a disgrace that we did not complete the transition ourselves years ago. We signed up to go metric in 1875, long before the EU was conceived. We are the laughing stock of the 241 other countries who have successfully adopted SI units, and are losing out on trade with them.
Tory MEP, Giles Chichester thinks that it is "good news for British and European industry to keep imperial measurements as it would make it easier for them to sell to the United States.” According to the US Metric Conversion Act of 1975, Sec. 205b. Declaration of policy, non-metric weights & measures can only be used for non-business activities.
“It is therefore the declared policy of the United States--
(1) to designate the metric system of measurement as the preferred system of weights and measures for United States trade and commerce;
(2) to require that each Federal agency, by a date certain and to the extent economically feasible by the end of the fiscal year 1992, use the metric system of measurement in its procurements, grants, and other business-related activities, except to the extent that such use is impractical or is likely to cause significant inefficiencies or loss of markets to United States firms, such as when foreign competitors are producing competing products in non- metric units;
(3) to seek out ways to increase understanding of the metric system of measurement through educational information and guidance and in Government publications; and
(4) to permit the continued use of traditional systems of weights and measures in non-business activities.”
It is ridiculous to hamstring Britain’s internal & international trade, education & science with 200+ metric countries by using two sets of units, so that we can to trade with one country whose declared policy is to do business in metric and also to “Buy America”.

to ascertain out it really is a more effective calue, you may want to make the grams of jam an similar. the ideal thanks to attempt it really is to multiply both numbers jointly. You get 154360. Now, you opt to multiply a million.fifty 4 with 340 and a million.25 with 454 to work out it really is a more effective fee. You get 523.6 for the first determination and 567.5 for the 2d. because the first is more low priced with an similar quantity of grams, the first way is the more effective fee on you money.
