It could be any of the things other people mentioned but it could also be turf toe. If it hurts to move the toe up toward you its possibly turf toe, if it hurts on the inside then could be a bunion, if it hurts all over then it could be gout, or it could be none of those things...what you need to do is see a doctor and get a proper diagnosis because the treatment is vastly different for all the things mentioned above. Don't let this go for too long because if it starts to hurt so much that it affects the way you walk then you may have other problems in other parts of your body.

Sounds like you have the beginning symptoms of a bunion. Make sure your shoes are wide enough for your feet. Do NOT wear shoes that are tight on your feet. Has your big toe started to turn slightly inward toward the next toe?
With a bunion, the base of your big toe (metatarsophalangeal joint) gets larger and sticks out. The skin over it may be red and tender. Wearing any type of shoe may be painful. This joint flexes with every step you take. The bigger your bunion gets, the more it hurts to walk. Bursitis may set in. Your big toe may angle toward your second toe, or even move all the way under it. The skin on the bottom of your foot may become thicker and painful. Pressure from your big toe may force your second toe out of alignment, sometimes overlapping your third toe. An advanced bunion may make your foot look grotesque. If your bunion gets too severe, it may be difficult to walk. Your pain may become chronic and you may develop arthritis

Sounds like a mild case of gout. Its supposed to show some minor swelling and redness, but when I had it you could hardly detect it. Have your doc check your uric acid levels in the blood.

Could be arthritis or a bunion? I have arthritis in the joint of my right toe, and it usually isn't swollen unless I wear bad shoes or walk a lot. But sometimes, it just gets just red, or just aches. Wear good shoes.
