I think "compassion" means you can imagine what someone is feeling so well, it almost makes you cry. Compassion can be positive and negative.
Positive are happy tears, for instance if you have to cry because a family is reunited on the Oprah show. This is only possible if you like the person(s). And therefore think you know them a little (because you can identify).
Negative compassion is when there's no happy-ending in sight, and all you can do is feel sad for him/her. Also, you have to like the person and know him/her a little.

"Having pity" is when you can't imagine what someone must be feeling, because it's too painful. Maybe a disorder you don't know anything about. "Having pity" mostly means you are distanced from it.
If you get to know the person, this can turn into compassion.

Try the last one if you feel you need to isolate. Don't identify too much. Too much compassion on the negative side is not good for you and could even pull you under too.

Compassion is truly caring for others and understanding what they deal with. Pity is charity and usually does not help either the sender or the recipient.

If you are a compassionate person, this is a rare fine quality, indeed....you see the sadness in others, even to the point of putting yourself and your own life on hold...there is nothing wrong with being empathetic, just take time to make sure YOU are empathetic to YOU...And God Bless,....through Jesus, who LOVES your attitude.
