An integrated circuit (IC Chip) is a small chip that replaces a small part of a circuit.

In the days before IC's, there were resistors, transistors, diodes, vacuum tubes, etc., on the circuit board.

The IC places all those parts into a small multi-legged chip to perform all the same duties that the numerous parts did.

It saves time and size-requirements for a circuit board.
