you have to go to an EENT, a specialist doctor for eyes, ears, nose, and throat. you feel like being suffocated only if the tonsils are too swollen (grade 3 to grade 4 tonsil size) because they cover or almost cover the opening in your pharynx leading to the esophagus (digestive) and larynx (pulmonary), thats why you cant swallow or have a hard time breathing.

be sure to take your antibiotics for 1 whole week if prescribed. if you had more than 7 tonsilliis in a year, you will be advised to have a tonsilectomy since if not, the bacteria in the tonsils can go to your heart causing damage in your heart valves.

You do need to see a doctor. Don't let everyone freak you out. Your tonsils can swell drastically from a simple strep infection, which can be cured with a dose of antibiotics. In the mean time, you may find it easier to breath at night if you sleep sitting up. Feel better soon!

I've had this problem before.

Firstly- go to the local casualty ward if you are having trouble breathing
take some anti-inflammatories like ibprofen
take any antibiotics the dr has given you (you need to see one ASAP to give you some)
in the mean time also suck some anti-inflammatory lozenges, like cepacol or difflam

I don't like antibiotics, but I think infected tonsils most possibly means that you do need them. Go to the doctor so he can decide!
