It's an inflammation of a vein caused by a blood clot which is often caused by long periods of inactivity. It's not fatal, but if not treated properly the clot can move into your lungs and that just causes more complications.

Superficial thrombophlebitis rarely causes complications. However, there is a high risk of complications when the clot is in a deeper vein (deep vein thrombosis).

Complications of deep vein thrombosis include blood clots in the lungs i.e., pulmonary embolism; heart attack, and stroke.

You must promptly see a doctor ... if symptoms get worse, or if new symptoms occur; such as an entire limb becoming pale, cold, or swollen
