Wikipedia has a long article stating the various evidence favoring both skeptics and the reality of the shroud. It is not a simple forgery. Many people thought the issue was decided in 1998 when radiocarbon dating showed a date for a sample from the shroud from the Middle Ages. Wikipedia describes subsequent studies of how this might have been erroneous due to contamination from a fire and from bacteria.
One naturalistic explanation of the shroud discussed in this article is how bacteria on the skin at the time of death could have produced exactly this 3-D pattern. That would mean it is from a crucified man, but wouldn't say who that man was.

I read some of the other answers. Let us get real for one moment here. How exactly would you wrap a cloth so that you get a 2 dimensional image of a 3 dimensional body. It just does not work. You should be seeing a much different image if the shroud was real. And the image is strictly 2 dimensional just like a standard medievial painting would be. You could have hung the thing up as a picture.
Here are two sites you should find interesting,
http://skepdic.com/shroud.html
http://www.mcri.org/Shroud.html
and something entirely different,

i believe its real
ill share a story with you
my nan went to italy and visited the church where it is kept.
it used to be in this big wooden box. on the sides, it had little ledges where you could kneel and pray. my nan saw everyone praying there, so she did too, wothout knowing that the shroud was inside. instantly, she felt herself being drawn to the box, this enormous pulling power.
later, she found out about the shroud in there...
she wnt back to italy a few years later and she went to the box thing agin, but she didnt feel the pulling power and she was disappointed, then someone told her that they had moved the shroud and it wasnt kept there anymore...
my nan is perfectly sane and doesnt make up stories!!! this happened when she was still young, not old and senile
you cant really say if its real or no without seeing it for yourself. when you stand there....its just amazing.....
they have done other tests and they say its real. they did this special scan on it and where the eyes were, they got this image of coins, the jews used to place coins on their deads' eyes to keep them closed. the date of the coin was when Jesus was alive, the same emperor and everything....
and those coins werent around for very long so its not a mistake...
feel free to believe what you want...im just sharing my opinion and some stories with you
have a nice day...
God bless
btw cindy is right!!!! the 1st carbon test was wrong because of the smoke!

Is it a real shroud? convinced. Is it the shroud in which Christ become buried? rather a lot really no. Carbon 14 checks were administered which illustrate that the date of the fabrics and stains isn't fantastic to the first century ad. an fairly complicated faux, really, it become probably stained with some type of tea extract.

It seems that facts are of secondary importance to people who need to believe in something.
It's interesting to compare the reaction to the Turin Shroud on the one hand, and various fake fossils on the other.
The Shroud has been proven to be a medieval forgery, but it's still displayed as a relic and an object of veneration.
The fake fossils generated huge excitement in the archaeological community for a while, but as soon as they came out they were under attack. As soon as they could be proven false, they were dropped - except as an object lesson in bad science.

Experts are still trying to tell how the image was transfered so perfectly onto the shroud. As far as being authentic, I do believe that there is room for debate, but that does not discount the wonder that it is.
Oh, and BTW A. Crowley died from drinking cat blood doing rituals (Uremic poisoning). I do not know if he is a really credible source.

At first they thought it was real then they took a sample of it and ran a carbon test on it and they found that it was fake but then they looked back and found that it was in a room that their was smoke that mislead them into the wrong carbon dating then they run a new test on it and found that it was real

The Catholic Church used to boast about it until carbon dating proved it to be a fake. Now, the Catholic Church doesn't want to talk about it.
