Some places where Americans are still free, like here in Arizona, actually allow a law-abiding citizen to carry openly without a permit, believe it or not!
Even here, though, like everywhere else, carrying concealed without a permit, even though it is unConstitutional, is a FELONY in itself, whether you are guilty of any other crime, or not.
Bottom line, don't do the crime, or you WILL do the TIME!

You can also check packing.org for further information.

Most states require you to have concealed carry permits, even if you don't intend to carry it concealed. Oregon, as has been mentioned, does not have a law against carrying if it is not concealed, but you still need a concealed carry permit otherwise. Chicago and DC have near total bans on carrying, and the NRA is fighting that. In Alaska, HB 102, which took effect June 11, 2003 and changes Alaska Statute 11.61.220, allows anyone who may legally posess a firearm and who is 21 or older to carry concealed without obtaining a special permit.

Crimes involving firearms usually carry very strict penalties, and depending on where you live, this could be a firearms crime. I'd recommend against it. Many states are pretty easy to get your carry permit, although some are really tough too.

There was a time (20 years ago) when cops understood that you needed protection, and licenses were hard to come by. Therefore they cut some slack for folks.
However, now that CCW permits are available, don't expect any mercy if you carry without one.
If you need or want to carry a weapon, get the CCW.
Obviously check your local laws. You can see from the variety of responses that laws differ from state to state.

If you get caught with a CONCEALED weapon, your gun will be confiscated, you will either be arrested for carrying or at the very least you will get a ticket and have to appear in front of the judge. When the weapon is discovered the police have the right to search you and your things. It depends on the state. But, in Oregon ,it is legal to carry a gun as long as it is not concealed. You can carry it on your hip as long as you coat or shirt does not cover it.

It really depends on your state. You can find the gun laws at the NRA site HERE: http://www.nraila.org/gunlaws/

I think in Oregon it's legal to carry a gun without a permit so long as the weapon's not used for a crime (obviously) and it's not concealed.

Depends on where you live. Some states don't require a cary permit. If you live in a state where a cary permit is required then either get one or don't cary a firearm. If you get caught, you will soon find out what the inside of a jail looks like and what it means to be some big weird dude's be-ach.

Get legal and stay legal.

It depends where you live. Some States have what is called 'open carry,' which means an individual (without a criminal record) can carry a handgun in plain view. NOTE: Since the days of the 'Old West,' open carry has NOT been legal in Texas. I don't know about other States.

Where open carry is not legal that individual is sure to be arrested if he is caught.

Depends on your location. If you're in Vermont or Alaska, you're perfectly legal to carry open or concealed without a permit.
