If we would land mines around the border, wouldn't the signifcantly reduce the number of illegal immigrants that would attempt to cross the borders of Mexico and Canada.

Gerry, we take in more immigrants than any other country in the world. Those who live below the poverty line live much better than they would in their 3rd world countries. Why do you think they want to come here? We are one of the worst countries when it comes to the issue of poverty? Why don't you come experience America. We are not coddled like your tiny island, or the puny countries of Europe, who's governments hand out free health care and housing for their citizens. We actually have a work ethic. Lots of you sit around on the dole, drinking yourself sick in pubs. As for helping you whenever you were in trouble, and now getting this attitude, makes you ingrates. Here's a news flash: France, after their disgusting attitude towards the US, has now turned around and has said to the US, we have a big problem with these immigrants coming in, and we need help with resources. Sorry, France has a problem. No, they can use their own resources from now on, and so can you. That came from the US. Guess you are on your own. Get some perspective before you spout off about the US.

Sounds great to me in theory....but it wouldn't fly. Minefields are not impenetrable. We would need a wide band of other defensive barriers, even still people would find a way through. But it would highly discourage them. The reason we will never see it is for the reasons given above...land mine treaties, ACLU, claims of racism, liability if citizens were to get zapped, cost ,etc....

Beyond stupid international laws being violated you would put legal Americans at risk with land mines. Just better to shot to kill less chance of an American getting hurt.

yes, mines would significantly reduce illegal entry but the ACLU and others would scream how evil and unfair it is!!
A dead mans strip would work with multilingual warning signs.. Farmers would no longer have to keep repairing their cut fences every morning and wildlife (except the vultures) would avoid the strip...even without the mulit lingual signs...

ps.QW international Law?? what a soverign country does with ITS land is not regulated by international law

Yes it would help but it wouldn't be enough. Our laws just need to be enforced. We don't need reform that's just a bunch of people wanting to change the laws to suit themselves.

Because that would put us in violation of international law. Land mines aren't allowed by treaties that we are involved in even in military encounters, much less civilian encounters. Furthermore, the governments of Mexico and Canada would (rightly so) protest immensely. And before you dismiss that, don't forget that the number one trade partner with the U.S. is Canada.

Oh, and maybe you might see to it in your heart how cold, heartless, and immoral a thought that is--you don't kill people for illegally immigrating.

Oh yeah that's worked really well in other countries where innocent children get blown to bits by them.
I think you're sick.

That would be illegal according to international conventions.
