If a guy is confident enough to use cute and not worry about how he looks or sounds, then more power to him! For example, how else would you describe a puppy? The only time it'd be wrong if someone is looking to be called "sexy" or "sophisticated" or "beautiful" and you say "She's cute." It may not seem wrong, but you will certainly make that person mad! :D

It's fine to use cute.
Other words could be found in a thesaurus if it isn't the right word for you. I am all for alternatives to cliche words.
endearing
charming
attractive
pretty
delightful
gorgeous
adorable
engaging
appealing
Or instead of using just a simple word, the guy could use some more language techniques to make his statements richer and more interesting. Like using similies, metaphors and comparisons to describe the cute qualities. For example Comparing the texture of something to another wellknown thing etc. Soft and delicate like the petals of a beautifully scented rose.
Sharp like a jagged piece of glass from a bottle i dropped and broke.
Small and loveable like a troll doll?
As Dainty as a barbie doll?
i dunno the possibilities are many and limited by your imagination.

In reference to a girl, I think it's fine.
In reference to a dog or cat or other pet, I guess it's OK there, too.
If you're going to be talking about an item like a car or wallet or something, maybe use "cool", "awesome", "sweet", or any other word that just comes to mind.
"Cute" to me has always been a girlie-sounding word when talking about regular old items :\

Depends on the situation. If a guy says that another guy looks cute, it would sound totally gay. If a guy says that a girl is cute, there's nothing wrong with that (unless the girl isn't cute).

An alternative to using that word would be not using it.
Look up some synonyms if you feel like it.
