First of all, I'm a Christian, but something about my fellow Christians has been bothering me lately. Why do so many people quote the Bible to non-believers as evidence? If we're trying to reach out to them, why do we throw out an argument they couldn't possibly accept? Why are Christians surprised when they reject the argument that the Bible is right because the Bible says so? Please, this is a serious question and not meant to offend anyone.

A lot of good stuff here. While I still think and many seem to agree that Christians should be aware of the logic in our arguments, some of you explained very well why quoting scripture has an important place in reaching out to non-believers. And U98, I hope you understand that that's exactly the type of argument that I was referring to.

"Why do so many people quote the Bible to non-believers as evidence?"
Haven't you read the scriptures? There is power in the word of God. You said that you are a Christian, so then what does this mean?
Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Ephesians 3:7
I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power.
1 Thessalonians 1:5
because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

Do you see that? There is power, dunamis is the Greek word, from where we get the word dynamite. Real power, and if you don't know that, then consider yourself taught.

Do we preach the Gospel for our own sakes? I would say that I don't. I would say that I preach the Gospel for those few who God has chosen from before the worlds were formed.

There is a slight chance, and a small percentage of people who are chosen by God. It is to those few that I use the words which are understood and valued by those that still seek to know God.

My answer to any given question may not be for the asker, but to those who are wondering what the answer is to the question asked themselves.

"If we're trying to reach out to them, why do we throw out an argument they couldn't possibly accept?"
I refer you to what I just said. Weigh it on the Spirit, and I think that you'll agree. It is not a waste of time to answer in Spirit and truth if even one person is seeking it.

"Why are Christians surprised when they reject the argument that the Bible is right because the Bible says so?"
You are right. I think that if there is a Christian who is surprised at rejection of the word of God, then that Christian is naive. It's a good lesson to learn when you are a young Christian.

Biblical atrocities and other ignored matters are the things atheists want to discuss about with regards to the bible; and not the usual 'golden rule, sermon on the mount and gospel' goody stuff that's always much talked about. Take note that most atheists are really good in terms of bible scholarship.

Perhaps if christians were to have a look at these issues, the atheists might find interest in how you guys will deliver the 'message'.

Here's another.

Christian: The Big Bang is impossible because you can't have something from nothing.

Atheist: Ok, so where did God come from?

Christian: God is omnipotent, omnipresent. He has always been. He doesn't need a creator.

Atheist: Ummmm..... right. So the Big Bang needs a creator, but God doesn't. Good logic example there.

I agree with you, and when I was a non-believer I too did not accept the bible as proof or an explination for anything. I think personal experience is the way to tell people about your faith.

But the Bible does say that it is right and that you will burn in Hell if you do not believe that every single letter, period and apostrophe was sent by God who set the type in the printing press with his own inksplattered bare hands!

Quoteing scripture tends to encourage people to look further, even non Christians. Planting seeds is important, thats what Jesus tells us to do.

it is actually because we think we are right.....
& our Bible & Quran is right.....

In fact we try to give examples from our holy book......
that it was explained so many years ago.......
& now it is being proven true....
So our holy book must be right...

for example, in Quran[1400 years old book] we see the science of development of an embryo in a mother's womb....

& it was proven correct in like yester-century.....

So the one who knew all that 1400 years ago must know all the secrets of universe before he created it himself....
I mean, when we make a sofware, we know what are we going to make... right?
So God knew everything before he created everything.....
[which is our belief]
& we see that how can our holy book be wrong, which is created by te all knowing being...
so thats why we give references from our books...

Frankly, I think it's because they can't imagine a viewpoint so different from theirs. It's a logical fallicy, but we all make in different areas and different manners. It does make us look rather boarish though.
