In the name of Allah the most Gracious the Most merciful

The Prophet Muhammad [pbuh] asked Muslims to spread the greetings of peace '' Salaam'' to all and the Quran makes it
obligatory for Muslims to spread the greeting of peace to all of mankind and especially among themselves and Never to \ignore a peace greeting but to reply courteously or with a better greeting.Even jesus [pbuh] used the word Shaloom a hebrew word for peace.

Assaalamu Aliekum ,means peace be on you
Aliekum asaalam means peace be on you too!
This is an equal greeting!

Now If someone greets you with ''Assaalamu Ailekum ''
and you want to greet that person with a better greeting, then
you say ''Assaalamu Aliekum wa rehamutallah ''which means
''May peace and blessings of Allah be upon you''

And if some one greets you with ''Assaalamu Aliekum wa
rehamutallah''
Them you will reply ''Assaalamu Aliekum wa Rehamutallhi wa
barahatu"' which means, ''may the peace blessings and mercy of Allah be upon you"

Compare this Islamic Greetings to the normal greetings of
Good morning, Hi, hello, etc and you will see how much more
better is the islamic greeting for promoting world peace.

The meaning of the complete greeting of muslim is assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatuh that means may Allah bless you with safety and prosperity This greeting should be answered by other muslim by saiyng waalaikum salam warohmatullahi wabarokatuh that means and may Allah bless you with safety and prosperity too..Its answer is not mualaikumwasalam.Safety and prosperity can be interpreted also as peace be upon you. This greeting is better than saying good morning , good day ,good afternoon or good evening/night..

The islamic full greetings is ''Assalam allaykoum wa rahmatt Allah wa barakato''
which means, ''May peace, God's mercy and blessings be upon u''
and we have to fully reciprocate this greeting if it was full, we cant just cut it in return, and whoever starts greeting gets more good deeds than the one reciprocating, its a way to encourage social solidarity.

It is more like this:

Al salaam alaikum
Wa alaikum al salaam

It is the greeting and response of Muslims to one another. It means "Peace be upon you", "and upon you be peace."
