RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF REDUCING TEEN SMOKING BY INCREASING STATES’ TOBACCO TAXES.
WHEREAS: Every day in our nation, 5,000 kids, under the age of 18, which includes adolescents of child-bearing age, smoke their first cigarette. Another 2,000 kids become regular daily smokers, one third of whom will die prematurely as a result of tobacco-caused disease, and approximately 1 out of 5 of pregnant teenagers pass the risks of smoking on to their babies directly or through exposure to second-hand smoke.
WHEREAS: One of the most effective ways to reduce smoking, particularly among adolescents, is to raise the price of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and other tobacco products through tax increases; be it
RESOLVED: That the undersigned national organization join the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and American Lung Association in urging states to substantially increase their excise taxes on cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and other tobacco products; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the undersigned national organization urges its state and local affiliates and partners to join campaigns in their states working to increase tobacco taxes.
