1. Always run a carfax report on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This will probably tell if you if the car odometer has been rolled back, or if it was ever titled as salvage, and then had the title washed, which means retitled in several states so it no longer shows as salvage.

2. Always have an independent certified mechanic inspect the vehicle. They can often come to the vehicle and perform this inspection. They can find signs of damage, previous accidents, or glaring mechanical flaws that you might not notice.

3. Just ask the owner about the car and it's history with them. Specifically ask them about any flaws that they know of. It's a used car, it doesn't have to be perfect. I know when I sold my used car privately, I told the guy every single thing wrong I could think of, because I didn't want him to come back saying I screwed him.

4. Take a test drive. Try to notice things like squeaks, rattles, vibrations and noises. Also pay attention to things like braking, and how comfortable you are in the car. Listen to the engine when accelerating. Pay attention to the shifting of the transmission. Is it rough or jerky.

If the owner is unwilling to do any of these things, walk away.

Rust, the paint and ask if its ok to take it to a mechanic you trust to make sure it will need no major work done on it such as brakes, engine ect. A reputable car dealer should allow this. If not I would be suspect of his vehicle.
