Lyme disease is transferred while the tick is drinking. If the tick was very tiny and blackish, chances are good he didn't bite your dog at all. Once a tick bites, it stays attached for several days and becomes engorged. Often, the stretched skin will appear more of a tan or olive color than the black/brown color. At that point, it's best to see a vet.

Hi Cholschlag, yes the only way a tick can transmit the bacteria is to remain attached to the animal's skin for one to two days. Unfortunately, these ticks are very small and easily can go unnoticed. So, I would recommend a thorough examination by your veterinarian your dog.
The main clinical signs of Lyme disease in dogs include a sudden yet recurring lameness that may shift from leg to leg. Sometimes this lameness is associated with a fever and depression. Occasionally you will see swollen lymph nodes. Sometimes the joints may be swollen, feel warm, and it's very painful. The dog infected will usually walk stiffly with a hunched back. Lyme disease in dogs is really very painful and they commonly are very sensitive to touch and may cry out with even the slightest touch. Many dogs with Lyme disease that were diagnosed with slipped discs in their neck and crying in pain and it was actually Lyme disease causes muscle spasms in the neck and they only improved when they were administered the appropriate antibiotic. Sometimes you will see the classic red round target lesion around a tick bite on your pet and within a few days they may show the signs of lameness, fever and sensitivity to touch.
Treatment involves the use of an appropriate antibiotic, such as doxycycline, for at least three to four weeks. Dogs should begin to show signs of recovery two to three days after beginning treatment. However, the disease may recur within a few weeks or months; in these cases, the dog will need to return to antibiotic therapy for extended periods.

Chances are if the tick was still crawling it hadn't bitten your dog yet. Don't panic!
There is a vaccine for dogs against Lyme Disease. You might want to consider getting that.
My dog got Lyme disease once and it was AWFUL. The poor little guy was absolutely miserable. So all my dogs get vaccinated now. It's not 100% effective but it's better than nothing.
Good luck!

Lyme disease (borreliosis) is not carried by all ticks. The tick hatch as uninfected larvae, then may aquire the infection by feeding on an infected host, then passing onto another host. Transmission is highest in spring & fall when they are actively seeking hosts. Lameness, fever, anorexia, lethargy, and swollen lymph nodes are common signs, with or without swollen joints. Ehrlichia is also a tick-disease concern. Both can be detected with a simple blood test done in the office.
Using a tick control, such as frontline plus, can help. "Fleas and ticks do not have to bite your pet for Frontline Brand Products to work. Frontline Brand Products kill fleas and ticks if they simply come into contact with your pet's hair coat. The fleas will die within 18 hours of contact with your treated pet, and ticks will die within 48 hours. "

If there is only one tick, this is a simple problem:
Get some olive oil and drown the head of the tick in it. After 2-3 hours, the body of the tick should come off easily.
As a matter of fact, if all found was at tick crawling on your dog, why not just get if off the dog and kill it?
Don't fret too much.
You can get your dog some Garlic/Brewers Yeast Supplement. these come in chewables, and most dogs love them. They help out a great deal against pests like fleas and ticks, and they promote great fur.

It is best to see your vet. Deer ticks are the ones that spread lyme disease. I use frontline and wouldent put a tick color on my dog ever. Would you put a band of chemicals on your neck.

I hope you were able to remove that tick, they can cause paralysis in dogs. Always check you dog for ticks especially if they have long haired coats and you live in a rural or semi rural environment. Don't forget to mow your lawn! No need to take your dog to the Vet if the tick hasn't bitten.

No way the vet costs way too much money. Unless money is not an issue. Just go to the local grocery store and you can buy some tick shampoo. And also purchase a flee and tick collar. Could also get a grooming brush and brush the dog daily or weekly. Only thing the vet will do is bathe the dog and maybe come up with some other means to charge you a fortune,. summer
