they're not attached to the corners, though. you can take them out, and there's 8 of them

After painting on it, a canvas can develop some slack, much like the way your jeans stretch out after wearing them. Using two per corner, you can gently tap the small plastic triangles in to the grooves in the stretcher strips, and they will stretch the canvas back out. The same thing can be accomplished by wetting the back of the canvas slightly. It will pull taunt as it dries. This technique is especially good if you get any "pokies" while the painting is being stored (as long as it is not punctured) When using the plastic triangles, be sure not to stretch the canvas out of square. If it needs to be stretched that far, you may need to take it off the stretcher strips and re-stretch it all together.

They are there to stretch your canvas...if need be. Usually the plastic version does not stick that well.

Do not overstretch just a firm tap to make sure your canvas is tight. but not so tight you could play drums on it. this could make your primer crack.
