It depends on the sickness. If a dog has a fever it will lay around and be quiet and not want to eat. It will also feel warmer to the touch than normal. If the stomach or intestines are involves they will arch their backs and have a tucked up appearance to their abdominal area because of the pain in that area. This usually involves vomiting and diarrhea too. You should not give meds to a sick dog without checking with a vet. Many human medications can cause death or at the very least make the condition worse.

The only way i know of on how to take a dog's temp., is rectally. If he's losing weight, he might have gotten into something that is definetly not agreeing with him. If your vet has not done this already, they need to draw some blood and have it tested for anything and everything. If his gums are not a healthy looking (look kind of a dark pink), then the vet needs to check for antifreeze poisoning. He could have gotten enough into his system to make him really sick. I'm not saying that I'm a vet or just saying that to scare you, but I've seen all kinds of stuff happen to animals. And I've also helped take care of all kinds of sick animals. Lots of luck to you!!

Feeling the ears, nose or head is not considered a reliable method; you have to determine your dog's internal temperature to find out for certain.
Take his temperature by using a normal human thermometer with lube & insert into the rectum. The canine "normal" body temperature range is 100.5 - 102.5 *F.
If it's higher than that, he needs to get to the vet.
Have you asked that labwork be completed (blood chemistries, platelet count, fecal, etc)? Was it even offered? Dogs dont just drop weight for no reason. Had there been a change in diet? How is his eating & water intake? Any vomiting or diarrhea present? Is there contact with any other dogs/animals? Anything in the house he could've gotten into?

Did he have blood panels/tests done/ Stool sample, urinalysis?
Temp is taken rectally 100 to 103 F is with in norm range. But it's nice to know what your dogs normal temp is.
Dogs don't get fevers like humans (they can't break a sweat through-out bodily pores).
But if they are over heating, you can cool them down by a cool water bath, alcohol, rubbed on feet, and around ears. I doubt this is why he is crying. Sounds like you should get a 2nd opinion from another vet.

You can tell if your dog has a fever by using a rectal thermometer. If your dog is 7 then I am assuming that he is getting kinda old. I would strongly recommend taking him to another vet and getting a second opinion.

Food recall? What are you feeding him? Did they test for kidney failure?
Take a rectal temperature. Anything over 102 is too high the dog should be wet down with cool (NOT COLD) water and taken to the ER.

What did the vet say? The vet should have checked his temperature. It sounds as if your dog is really in distress and if the last vet didn't help, you need to bring him to another vet.
Good luck.

If you have already taken him to the vet and he hasn't improved take him back again. Unless you know what you are doing I wouldn't suggest taking your dogs temp. as it has to be done rectally.

Sounds like he needs a complete blood screening done sooner rather than later.
The vet should have taken his temperature.
