Moises,
Peter went to the region to preach and to teach. HIS guidance could only be used to sway people if those people thought that he was the founding Priest of Catholicism. HE was a follower of Jesus Christ and the HOLY SPIRIT gave him as well as the other Apostles many useful gifts as long as they lived so that they could perform a number of miracles and convert others to Christ's Message. The Catholics are following the man-made religion rather than GOD's.

EDIT:
Keri and a few others,
From Matthew 16: 13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Notice that Jesus asked the disciples who they thought that HE was in verse 13. In verse 16, Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Peter realized that CHRIST was the MESSIAH without being told. Christ said that peter was blessed because GOD had shown him that. Then HE told Peter that "upon this rock" (CHRIST) I will build my church. They were speaking of CHRIST in the former sentences and this carries on here. CHRIST is the one who will judge each of us at the time GOD has chosen. We are told that Christ is the "Bridesmaid" not Peter. There are so many other things in the scriptures that point to Jesus being the HEad OF his CHURCH yet many will not listen.
Thanks,
Eds

Because of Matthew 16:18 - Jesus uses a bit of wordplay in this verse. Peter's name is really Simon. But Jesus gives him a nickname (Cepha, or Petros, which is like calling somebody "Rocky").

In Acts, Peter is the first evangelist. He is the disciple who goes to the Gentiles, even before Paul. And it was by including the Gentiles that the early church grew. Since he was the first to do that, he gets a certain amount of credit.

According to the Prophet William Branham the rock which Jesus refers to is neither Peter nor Himself; but rather the revelation which flesh and blood cannot give. The rock is the revealed word.

Jesus has built the church on the rock of present revelation. The difference is knowing about Jesus or knowing Him in our midst now.

As we all know Rome killed Apostle Peter before the miraculous conversion of Constantine and the Edict of Milan which gave religious freedom for all. Knowing this fact the Roman council for some reason in their confused state decided to name Peter the first Pope of the Roman church(not the real Peter). Renowned theologians refute the Catholic tale, but it is still taught to this day.

Peter's name in Hebrew is rock. However Jesus was saying that he was the rock and upon that rock(Jesus) you Peter are to build the church. The point the Lord was trying to make is that Peter was also going to have to display the same attributes of the savior himself to do this. To be strong and be a firm foundation as the leadership of the church was going to rest upon Peter.

Jesus Christ is the Rock everything is built on but Christ appointed Peter to be the Rock "He" (Jesus) would build His Church on. Peter; just as all Priests, function only by and through Jesus Christ.

You do see the difference, I hope..... Jesus is the Rock...THE Rock.... and Jesus said to Peter that he would be the Rock His Church would be built on. A very big difference.

Jesus was speaking to Simon Peter when he said this:

Matthew 16:19 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)

19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[a] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[b] loosed in heaven."

Yes Peter is not the rock and Jesus is. Catholics believe in a lot of things that is not in the bible like Praying to saints (Mary who is dead), changing the sabbath to Sunday, and statues of Mary and Jesus on the cross. There's more but i don't feel like listing them all down.

Catholics say that Peter is the rock because Jesus said it.

John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

With love in Christ.
