"we might as well throw the Bible out the back door and do what ever feels good to us"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm afraid that most so-called "christians" already do that :(
but then Jesus *did* say that many who claim to follow him would be workers of lawlessness and that few Christians would be on the narrow road to life; see Matthew 7:13-23
Jesus said that false christians dont do the will of his Father. The will of Christ's Father is of course in the OT
agape!
You have a good point, but your references are taken out of context.
Jesus said he came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. That means the laws never went away or became void. However, because He also said that whoever believes in Him shall be saved, it means that people who believe in Him as their Savior will not be judged according to that law. That's what Paul is talking about - if a person really believes, they're going to want to do the right thing all the time and won't sin anymore. If the person always wants to do good, they don't need to bother with memorizing the rules.
None of this means that people can just behave badly! It means that they WANT to live according to the law and the Holy Spirit helps them do it - internally, not because it's a law. For example, lawyers are encouraged to do a certain amount of pro bono work. Some of them whine and complain and eventually get around to it. Others truly want to help others and would do it even if the bar association didn't require it.
Jesus tells us that He fulfilled the law. This means that actually no one could or ever will be able to follow the laws for salvation. Our salvation is in Jesus. Only Jesus. We can't be good enough or sinless enough to earn salvation.
Yes, the laws tell us about sin but we can't be saved by following the law. God tells us that Jesus is the sacrifice for our sins because He is perfect and we are not. Jesus justifies us.
Jesus says that if we love God with all of our heart, soul and mind and love others as ourselves, Matthew 22:37. This is the summation of all of the laws and this is what God wants us to do, after we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. This sanctifies us.
What the Apostle Paul says about the Law:
Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one. Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. (Galatians 3:19-25)
The coming of Jesus placed mankind under a new "law" or covenant. Basically in a nutshell, Jesus challenged us to, putting it loosely, "take it to the next level" Much as a father puts rules in place for thier children and as they grow they learn to be more responsible and can live with less "rules" because they understand the meaning of those rules and are mature.
God started out with a group of people who were accustomed to the ways of pagan civilizations. I.E. the Hebrews living under Egyptian rule and he had to lay rules in place to guide them in the direction of the way he wanted them to live. Much like a father directs his children and teaches them right from wrong.
After thousands of years, The rules were well in place (The Jewish Culture) and they finally were mature enough to understand the ethics and concept of the way they were supposed to live. Jesus came and applied a new meaning to these laws and spoke about being more mature with their walk with God and challenged mankind to be more mature with them. I.E. Old Law-If any man or woman commits adultry then the spouse should divorce them. Jesus' Challenge-Whoever lusts after a woman has already commited adultry with them in their heart. This is a perfect example of taking the law to the next level. It does not mean the old laws should be completely disregarded and to do whatever you want, because that is not what is best for mankind,society, or your personal life, but rather to understand the concept behind them and be more mature about it so that your christian life and walk with God will be closer to what God expects.
Also, applying these guidelines to your life will allow you to strive to be free of sin, however, no one is free of sin, and that was the whole purpose of Jesus. He sacrified himself for mankind so that if we accept that gift, we will be saved.
I have been a Christian for a long time, and I will admit that I have sinned everyday. Just because a person is a Christian does not mean they are sinless. If any self claimed christian says that they are sinless, they are liars. They are only saved because of Jesus' sacrifice not of thier own deeds. Nothing a man can do will make them sinless, even the pope himself is full of sin. He is man and man is full of sin.
I was once doubtful of the whole religion scene myself, thinking that science could explain everything but there are many things that science (a man created entity) cannot explain. I.E. how did everything come into being, why is it that humans know right from wrong and animals don't, how is it that the sun is just the perfect distance from the earth, how is it that the earth is perfectly balanced for ecosystems to occur, and thousands of other questions that come to mind.
Science does not explain these things and Einstein once quoted that if science is studied long enough and deep enough it will force you to believe in a higher existence.
I then researched other religions besided christianity and christianity is the only religion that makes sense to me, the ethics in place, the challenge of living a life that strives to bring good into an evil world, living selflessly, etc.
So, yes sometimes religion does seem far fetched but when we try to understand our world some things don't fit into a world without God and the coming of his Son and the concept behind it makes perfect sense. I would read the Bible and really try to understand it's purpose.
Try these links they will really help a doubtful person see things differently they did me:
And one more thing to add:
Evolution does exist, it is mentioned in the Bible in the old testament when selective breeding was practiced, but it does not explain the creation, it only explains what happens once a creation is here. Trace it back far enough and something had to create even the bacteria and the physical dimension in which they existed, ie, the water, the atmosphere, the physical laws such as gravity, time, etc. They did not just appear and science can only explain what is within our realm of existence but cannot explain what created them.
Here is a good analogy:
On an airstrip there are all of the parts necessary to build a boeing 747. They are all there just not assembled. Ok, now a tornado comes through, what are the chances that when once the tornado is gone, the airplane is assembled and ready to take off. Highly doubtful. How much more complicated is a life form than a simple machine?
There has to be an intelligent creator that first created the parts and then assembled them in a logical order.
Really puts it in perspective for me.
God Does exist and Jesus is his son.
I personally do not agree with that. I believe that we are in a new covenant that was sealed by Jesus's death and resurrection. I do not believe though that this belief means that all those things you listed are now ok. Jesus said you should love the Lord your God with all your heart all all your mind and all your soul and that we should love our neighbor as yourself. This was obviously a quote from the law, but I think restating it was important part to show that we are still to obey God in this way even though we are not under the law anymore.
I also think its important to consider that if you believe we are still under the law, than you have to accept all of the law and would have to abide by the dietary restrictions as well as the other laws found in the old testament.
We are not under the old testament, and you can't just mix the two up.. You are denying the work of the Holy Spirit in every believer.
Those that are led by the Holy Spirit are the children of God.
Also most of the ten commandments are repeated in the New Testament.
If you are going to keep the law, then you need to go back to animal sacrifices and the rest of the law.. Are you going to keep the feast of Tabernacles..or the pass over ? That is a commandment.
Frankly, your message confuses me. Perhaps, it is because I am Catholic.
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church
1848 As St. Paul affirms, "Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more." But to do its work grace must uncover sin so as to convert our hearts and bestow on us "righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Like a physician who probes the wound before treating it, God, by his Word and by his Spirit, casts a living light on sin:
Conversion requires convincing of sin; it includes the interior judgment of conscience, and this, being a proof of the action of the Spirit of truth in man's inmost being, becomes at the same time the start of a new grant of grace and love: "Receive the Holy Spirit." Thus in this "convincing concerning sin" we discover a double gift: the gift of the truth of conscience and the gift of the certainty of redemption. The Spirit of truth is the Consoler.
Or, how about a simpler message from one of our Founding Fathers:
"Sin is not hurtful because it is forbidden, but it is forbidden because it is hurtful." -- Benjamin Franklin
yes, i do think that some preachers teach against it. But that is why in the Bible, Paul told Timmothy in 2 Timmothy 2:15 of the KJV says: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." So, we as listners would be able to determine the truth in our own way according to the gosiple of the Bible.
You should probably check for yourself that Jesus confirmed the 10 Commandments (Matthew 17-19)
We are however freed from the ceremonial law. Paul is right on this count.
