Here are some reasons.
* There are different reasons for different kids.
* Some are drawn by parties, girls, & drugs.
* Some are looking for a sense of respect and power.
* Some find a feeling of caring and attention in a gang. It becomes almost a family to them.
* Some want to make money -- to help out at home or to have nice clothes, etc.
* Some join for self protection because they are picked on by other gangs.
* Some grow up in a neighborhood where it is almost a way of life.
* Most have some real or imagined problem at home that makes them prefer the streets.
As their drug addiction grows, their problems at home become worse because parents don't know how to cope with the addiction.

We have a society that glamorizes criminals, starting with Hollywood where almost every movie made makes the guards the bad guys and the inmates the heroes, then there is the lure of the fast buck, why hold a 9 to 5 job when you can make easy money selling drugs for the gang, most of the gangbangers are school dropouts that would have a hard time finding a good job,so why even try, then there are the parents that most of the time do not know where their kids are untill ther wind up dead or inprisoned

They enter gangs cause they want fast money. Even the nicest kids end up in the them. Mainly fast money. Peer pressure come on the whole school has peer pressure. A gang is not like joining a social club after school gathering. They want the women, cars, clothes, even drugs what they don't realize is within 5 years they will be locked up in prison and understand how stupid joing a gang was.

The most common answer to that question is very easy. They want the feeling of family, and the gang offers that to them. I know its a short answer but most gang members interviewed have said it.

cause some people grow up around that and its just normal to them others feel as if they have no where to belong so a gang offers a family like protection , then theres some people who just want to act bad and tough, there is actually a lot of different reasons

Lack of parental concern. Either neglect or lack of morals and ethics. In a gang you are like a family. There are unfortunate souls who are either deprived of this or are in a world of disfunction to begin with. This is why they turn to a life of crime and running with the wrong crowd. There is a definate breakdown of morals in this country. The ones responsible are definitely the parents.

Because they weren't drafted into the Army where they would have had a "Structured Environment".
The educational system is geared to the jocks and cheerleaders. Everyone else is pushed to the side. That is why counter cultures exist.

In some cases it falls along the lines of "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." Only for the reluctant person joining, it's more like, "So they don't beat you, join 'em."
