One of the main reasons, I believe, is a type of nerve called a mirror neuron. When you do certain actions, such as yawning or crying or laughing, these nerves activate. However, they also activate when you see someone else do these actions. They're important for intelligent animals in empathizing and understanding other's state of being. It's something that's still being researched, exciting stuff really, but it is believed there's a connection as to why yawning is 'contagious', just like seeing someone cry may make you sad, or how laughter is similarly contagious.

That's one of human brain's mystery till this day. However, sceintist believe that yawning is unconcious behavior we do it without knowing we are doing it sometimes, or even when we are on the phone when the other person yawns, you automaically yawn. Infact it's contagious even for animals. Other times we yawn because we usually don't have enough oxygen in our body and we have more carbon dioxide so our brain atumatically will make us yawn and inhale extra oxygen and exhale extra carbon dioxide.

From what I know, yawn is a semi-automatic reflex that originates in the brain stem in response to a lower level of oxygen in the brain. And when someone next to you yawns, normally they will draw in oxygen in higher amounts. This results in the air surrounding you to have lower concentration of oxygen and then you will yawn as well.
I hope it helped. Good luck!
