Your question is not clear, I think you are a novice, when you say dye do you mean bleach / lighten? And when you say best lightener before you dye it are you talking about natural dark unprocessed hair or dyed dark hair and you need a lightener to redye it a lighter shade than the inspecific 'dark' you mention (black, dark brown, medium brown).

If this is your first time going from black to blone, you need to specify how light you want to go and how your hair has been processed up to now (natural state, or from a previous process?). Anyway, good luck you can write me direct if you want. I can't answer better because I am not sure what you meant.

I can tell you had long dark hair. It was mostly natural impermanent dyes on it, but I wanted it platinum. I went from black to platinum in a period of about 3-4 days (usually takes 3-4 weeks). I was in a bad emotional state, and my dumb hairdresser turned the quick buck and succumbed to my dumb demands... (I love her, but don't go to her anymore). My hair eventuall all broke off, chin length. Is rather depressing to a degree, but falls help, (clips with hair) but they are like extensions, best not used at all or you have to depend on them, and I like a man to be able to touch my hair... so I had to go through hell for awhile... as I watched it break off more and more and more... even I went dark last summer, it is now a year later.. and still just getting better... bleaching high lights or a few shades lighter than natural is best, even platinum looks extra hot on the hot chicks like me who can work any color I put on... my hair couldn't take the constant upkeep as I hated to have a root show, and even did the brows (a must if you want to look better than a movie star and not cheap)... lots of girls leave their roots to grow from blond, and some this is like low lights and high lights which give a hair depth, and takes more time, and more involved as different shades make a full bodied color, but the other blonds just have a bright blond, (usually broke off, you will notice after awhile when you study it), and have ugly roots. Don't be like that.

I have dark brown hair...and i didn't use a lightener beforehand.

I colored my hair blonde and it came out fine, just darker than it was supposed to. To fix that problem, just dye your hair twice...like dye it blonde, wait 2 or 3 days, or maybe like a wekk, then dye it blonde again....do this sparingly though, because it can potentially really damage your hair.

When I put pink streaks in my hair, i just used the pink dye and it came out fine....

I am an asian and I got black hair, I went to salon and they did a bleaching first, and then dye, because our hair is really black so we need to seek for hair stylist to choose the correct color, usually the color should be lighter than what u wanted by 3 tones.
