There are so many rules for this now. What my fiance's family is paying for is the alchol at the reception, my flowers and mothers and grandmothers flowers and the rehearsal dinner. But, unless you are absolutely rich, everybody usually ends up chipping in with something. I think if their family and they are happy that you've found "the one" then it should be no problem to help out...at least I would.

I think it best that the wedding should be split say 40/40/20
meaning family on each side pay 40% and the couple chips in 20%. That way it doesn't look like the bride and groom just walk down the aisle and have everything payed for and it also shows that they really want to get amrried if they are shelling out some of there own money. I have known many wedding's that the bride and groom pay squat and well divorce or get annulment 2-3months down the line.

The Dudes get it easy. The groom and the grooms family usually pays for the Wedding, the rings, the bar and thats basically it. The Brides family pays for basically everything else.

At a full-blown, traditional wedding, the groom's parents pay for: wedding rehearsal dinner, tuxedos, the flowers and the honeymoon.

Traditionally they only pay for the rehearsal dinner. Nowadays though couples are waiting to marry and are already on their own, so sometimes the families split the cost between them and also the bride and groom.

If you're going by tradition, they are supposed to just take care of the wedding rehearsal. But nowadays, more and more couples are paying for the entire wedding themselves, or both sets of parents chip in wherever they can.
