They have a sinful desire which they've convinced themselve isn't sinful by misinterpreting the Koran.

No, they are just sinning. Many Muslims sin, just like Christians and Jews. This does not mean they hate their religion or anything of the sort. Maybe they don't know that it's a sin. Many Christians live with the boyfriend/girlfriend out of wedlock and this is a sin, but it does not mean they are anti-religious.

Muslim men can wear jewelry, it just should not be gold. Unfortunately there are many who choose not to practice this part of their faith, just like there are Christians who practice pre-marital sex. We are all sinners in one way or another, even if it is not intentional.

No, they're just making a mistake just like people of other faiths do.

Personally, I think it's a silly rule (the reason is that gold jewelry is thought to be "feminine" and men are told not to dress "like women" - which is outdated in 2007's culture)
