Mike M answered it pretty well. The Ten Commandments along with the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy contain several laws given by God to Moses. We are to live by these laws (they are not guidelines). Can we keep every single one every single day, No. They are used to show how much man has fallen into the depths of sin and that a saviour is needed. Christ is that saviour. But remember, Christ did not do away with the law. In fact, He expanded it when He gave His "beatitudes - Matthew 5:1-16 (King James Version)". Only by the grace of God through His Son can we be free of sin.

Read Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 5-7). That is the REAL standard. Jesus takes each commandment and gives its actual application and level of obedience required. No, Exodus is not the only guidelines, not by a long shot. Read all of the Bible.

My first reaction was to point out that we are no longer under the 10 commandments. We are now subject to the New Testament.

Of course, 9 out of the 10 commands were repeated in the New Testament either directly or in principle. So we are to keep those 9, not because they were in the 10 commandments, but because they are in the law of Christ!

My next reaction is to point out that the 10 commandments were never meant to be merely "guidelines", but they were COMMANDMENTS. They were the law of God!

No. They are the first and main guidelines, but hardly the only guidelines. The Bible is a dictionary on guidelines to living life. You just have to read and understand it. OT and NT reflect each other.

NO.they are the basis of His law, but you have to read the bible and get to know God through His word. Jesus didn't come to abolish the law. He came to add to the law.Love your neighbors and follow the ten commandments. There is a rule for every part of our lives.

With all the sin in the world, God wants us to realize that His government was and is perfect. Satan is the ruler of this world and we must do our best, with the help of the Holy Spirit to overcome these temptations.

By following God's laws, we find ourselves relieved, satisfied, full of joy, but that doesn't mean we'll not have hardships.

As far as I'm concerned, the Ten Commandments are all subsumed in The Golden Rule.

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

With the possible exception of things like the commandment dealing with graven images, the "shalt nots" dealing with killing, stealing, lying, coveting, dishonoring your parents, and so forth, all fit conceptually within the 11 words of the Golden Rule, which makes it all so much easier to remember.

I don't think so. You're supposed to follow the word of the bible, right? the Ten Commandments are just the big ones.

No. All through the Bible there are other guidelines like in Proverbs, Psalms, the Epistles, etc., but, these are the basics and the foundation on which the others are addressed.

The Bible says that they are a mirror to show us that we are in need of a Savior. His name is Jesus and He was the only one to live a sinless life. He was the perfect Sacrifice and He paid the price of our sins by dying in our place. All we have to do is turn from our sins, the best way that we can and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. When we do this, God gives us the Holy Spirit. That is why we are called Born Again. It is God's Spirit, God Himself, that saves us and not of ourselves, lest anyone should boast. Then His righteousness becomes our righteousness.
