I've had some pretty bad health problems recently. I got a stomach flu that never seemed to go away so I've been vomiting after I eat or drink just about anything. I'm terrified of doctors but have gone through some tests. The problem is that about 2 weeks ago I got an infection in my lung. The doctor put me on medication and after taking it twice I broke out in hives. I had the same reaction with two different medications all of which I have taken without problems in the past. Then today I attempted to eat a strawberry and my mouth and tongue swelled all up and I've now got blisters in my mouth. These are all things that until very recently I've tolerated just fine! I'm so confused and afraid to eat anything. What could be causing this? Please help.
other info:

- enlarged heart ventricle due to stress from weight loss
- 4' 9" 78lbs (lost a lot of weight with the stomach problem)
**This isn't in my head I even had a psyc. work up done**

Hi Whisper. The types of problems you are experiencing can be very frustrating (for you and your doctor) and very challenging to diagnose.

I have a thought. One problem area can cause all of these issues ... a leaky gut! This is also called Intestinal Hyperpermeability. A leaky gut allows partially digested food molecules, toxins and even bacteria into the body. These can lead to a variety of allergic problems, as well as unexplained and even bizarre symptoms.

Leaky gut syndrome can result from use of antibiotics, NSAIDs (pain killers such as aspirin, Motrin, Tylenol, Alleve, etc.), chemicals, heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc.) and infections. I suspect several of these could be factors in your situation.

There is a fairly simple test that knowledgeable doctors can order to evaluate for a leaky gut (the lactulose/mannitol test).

Note: this condition is often associated with generalized poor nutrition - which can cause an enlarged heart ventricle (this condition is NOT caused by generalized 'stress' - otherwise everyone would have it).

You may need to find a better doctor - one trained in FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE and nutritional/environmental medicine.

Best wishes and good luck.

P.S. You may want to read a couple of good books on this subject.

1) "Leaky Gut Syndrome" by Elizabeth Lipski - just $3.95 at Amazon.com

2) "No More Heartburn" by Sherry Rogers, M.D. (don't let the title confuse you - this book thoroughly discusses gut disorders, leaky gut syndrome, allergies, etc.) Dr. Rogers is a leading authority on these kinds of health problems with over 35 years of clinical experience, research and numerous books.
