You want something that will perk you up and not make you sleepy. Thus, the best food choices are ones that contain neurostimulants vs. foods that sedate.
Throughout the brain, biochemical messengers called neurotransmitters help the brain make the right connections. Food influences how these neurotransmitters operate. The more balanced the breakfast, the more balanced the brain function. There are two types of proteins that affect neurotransmitters:
1) neurostimulants, such as proteins containing tyrosine, affecting the alertness transmitters dopamine and norepinephrine, and
2) calming proteins that contain tryptophan, which relaxes the brain. A breakfast with the right balance of both stimulating and calming foods starts you off with a brain that is primed for the day and stable emotions. Eating complex carbohydrates (think whole grain breads) along with proteins (eggs, bacon or ham, yogurt or cheese) helps to usher the amino acids from these proteins into the brain, so that the neurotransmitters can work better.
A breakfast that is balanced and light is the best bet. Eating too much at any meal, regardless of the carbohydrate or protein content, seems to diminish mental performance. So, to perk up the brain, eat a meal that is:
-High in tyrosine-containing proteins.
-Moderate in the amount of sugars, containing mainly complex carbohydrates.
-Relatively low in calories.
Here is a list of "good" and "bad" brain foods. (and by that, I mean ones that will stimulate and help you wake up are "good" vs. the sedating "bad" foods)

SO! What would be some examples of really good, pick-you-up "power breakfasts"? Try:
-hard boiled, poached or scrambled eggs (1 or 2) with a 1/2 bagel or 1 slice whole grain toast and a piece of fruit (add in a yogurt if you are very active and/or hungry)
-whole grain cereal with 1% milk and some berries
-eggs, 1 or 2 pieces turkey bacon and some whole grain toast
-whole grain bagel spread with peanut butter (all natural), a bit of cottage cheese (1 or 2%) and a handful of grapes
Hope that helps!

Yes Tranquiliser! :p
Joking lah. Wake up half an hour earlier to get ready for work, don't rush through things. Get clothing ready way before. Do your business. Play some soothing music... say a prayer of blessing. You are set and will not be so grumpy.
:)

Sleep better or longer at night, so that you feel refreshed in the morning. Also try eating a healthy breakfast for a better mood: oatmeal, fruit salad and yogurt, toast with peanut butter, ect.

Apples are proven to wake you up better than a cup of coffee, so maybe a mix of some fiber, antioxidant & energy will serve just the boost you need to make you a perky chika too!
