Spend whatever you can. Price ranges will change depending on where you live, circle of friends, etc. I know in my area, in my group of friends, the average e-ring costs $10k-$15k. But I don't think that is the average for most people. Pay whatever you can afford. Costco and Blue Nile are great options for those who want quality diamonds for cheaper prices.

I don't think that means anything...I think you should buy a ring you can afford, is of good quality, and one she will be proud to wear.
I think the 3 month's salary thing does make a little sense if you think about this--the ring is a symbol of your place in life, and it should be in line with where you are as a man, and as a couple...a doctor giving his fiance a .25 carat ring would be pitiful, but for a college guy to give that ring is very appropriate.
The average amount spent for a ring in the US is the high $2000's to low $3000's from everything I've seen. My ring was quite a bit more than that (about $7500), but we're older, and both professionals who've been working for a long time, so it fits with who we are as a couple.

That sounds a bit ridiculous, IMO. I would think one month's salary would suffice. We're not all gold-diggers! The thought behind it is what matters the most.
ETA 5-6 thousand dollars is a ridiculous amount of money! You can get a gorgeous, exquisite engagement ring for half that, if not less! Spend what you can afford, don't put yourself out for this.

Don't go with the marketing hype about whatever number of months' salary!
Just spend what you can comfortably afford, finding something you think she might like within your budget. Don't go into debt over a ring.

It is however much you can afford without going into debt or taking out a loan.
DON'T listen to what the jewelers say, they are out to get your money.
