I don't know much about omega 3 fatty acid except that it's supposed to be good for the heart, so I don't know why he'd give it to me for my depression? Any thoughts? Scientific evidence?

It's good for the brain too.

Nutritional medicine is taking off as a big fad. Some GP friends of mine are heavily into it (I'm an ED doc so I don't really think that fixing their diet is going clear a blocked airway for me ... at least not with current technology) and they say it's great stuff.

Antioxidants and Omega 3 fatty acids are good for the body in general and good for the brain in particular.

Hi Thomas. There is a rapidly growing body of scientific research indicating a deficiency of omega-3 essential fatty acids in depressive disorders. Most diets are grossly deficient in omega-3s. Many other common nutrient deficiencies can also be involved. Your doctor is on the right tract, but it would be better if he/she ordered a thorough laboratory assessment of your fatty acids and nutritional status. Then, a complete correction of nutritional/biochemical imbalances can be made.

Best wishes and good luck.
