Talk to her parents. If it's OK with them and you can afford it, why not?

Funny, we did give our god daughter a car for her HS graduation. (Correction 16th birthday! No wonder I was a little concerned.) ( Used Honda) There were really good reasons--mainly so she could take herself to her job so her mother didn't have to do it. Her father was terminally ill and her mother working full time. She is now a scholarship student in her Jr year at college. It was the right thing to do, but I worried about every angle. The decision was based on her character and the opportunity it gave her. Some people might think it was excessive, but we saw it as an investment in her future and it turned out to be that.
BTW, we had her parents' permission.

I'm not sure about an appropriate gift, but I'm about to graduate high school, and if my god mother gave me a car.... a gift that my parents wouldn't even give me, I'd think it'd be a little over the top.

I was going to say a card with money, but then I saw you were thinking of giving her a car! Well, I guess if you've been in her life this whole time and have a good relationship, why not a nice piece of jewelry?

Money is always apperciated. A nice watch or necklace could would just at well if you rather give her something material. Write her a note about how much you care about her and wish her the best in life. (or encouraging words and your own personal sentiments of course). She'll be happy!!

shouldn't her own parents be buying her a car. i think you might be steping over your bounds. I suggest giving her $500 towards her college fund or even the cost of the car you were going to give her. Atleast then your generocity would be going to a good cause.

A car is a bit extravegant for a godparent to give...
I gave my nephews and neices a book
http://www.seussland.com/ohplacesgo.html
Here is the text to the book..
http://www.mit.edu/people/adorai/seuss/seussboy.html
If you want to give a more extravegant gift a laptop or other item for her futher education would be more appropriate
