They are God's mouthpieces on earth.
Prophets were called to teach the people God's will for them at that time.
God also always sends a prophet or prophets to warn the people before they are "ripe in iniquity" ie "ripe for destruction". So prophets have also been messengers with a warning. Jonah was one of these - and the people repented and served God and were saved.
Amos 3: 7
7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

A prophet was the authorised spokesman of God. The following were marks of the true prophet
as distinguished from the false prophet: a consciousness of having been chosen and called by God; awareness of having a message from God, and with this message a mission to make it known in the name of God as his word. Another mark of the true prophet is the awareness that he had a mission and a mandate from God that he is not free to resist.
They were, therefore, inspired people with a function and a role, particularly in the liturgical life of the community, during which they intervened with inspired prayer, exhortation and admonition.
I think I have satisfactorily and authoritatively answered your question.
Peace an d blessings!

The role of the prophets was to speak God's word to the people. In essence, the prophets were the mouthpiece for God's voice.
Their words were often warnings, or promises (as in the covenants)
The covenants provided hope, the warnings provided a rebuke to return to the Lord.

Jesus told a very beautiful parable in this context: A Landlord sent out His rent collectors to collect rent .The tenants dealt very harshly with some and beat up the others .Finally the Landlord sent out His only son ,when the tenants heard this they said "this is the Heir ,come let us kill Him and all will be ours".The son was no doubt The Christ.Hope you understood this parable ( and the rent collectors ;the prophets).
