With all of the privacy issues, Doctors may not be talking because your Dad has not given them permission. Does that sound like something your Dad might do? If not, you and your Mom should ask.
If you are spending a lot of time in your Dad's room, let him set the tone. If he is not talking, stay quiet. I took cross stitch to do when sitting in my Dad's room. When he wanted to sleep or watch TV, I stitched. If he wanted to talk, we talked.
Hang in there.

The surgeon will probably only talk to your dad about how his surgery went. There are so many laws governing what a physician can tell a family member, they usually dont give any information to the family.
Also, sometimes it takes a couple of days to get a pathology report back to determine how far the tumor has spread. The pathologist can be slow and sometimes they send samples off to other labs like Mayo clinic, and other University hospitals.
Hang in there. Your dad should be up walking by now and on the move. The nursing staff would probably love it if you offered to help him walk.... like roll the IV poles and oxygen tubing.
Prayers are with you as always.

Hi, Christine.
Do the doctors visit your dad daily? My dad was also undergoing surgery. He had a bit of his colon removed because there was a tumor there, also something like megacolon. His doctors visit him daily, and give us the informations on developments etc.
I stay with him whenever I can. It's been almost two weeks. I find my dad looking more cheerful or hopeful if there are his kids around him. My mom passed away last year.
It's okay to visit him however long you like if it's allowed. The hospital let one family member to stay overnight to accompany my dad. You can stay with him, and give him support and encouragement. Also help him in small things, like giving him water, fluff his pillow, basically just make him more comfortable. Also be there if he wants to talk. If they feel lonely, it can stress them out and delay recovery.
God bless. And I hope your dad gets better soon.

My prayers are with you Christine. I don't know if it's common but I do believe some doctors can be so cold. I pray everything will be fine and the cancer hasn't spread. I also pray that will find a cure for this disease soon.
