I don't know about drinking alcohol while taking Lexapro, but I did take Lexapro for several years for bipolar. I also have PTSD. Lexapro did help with the depressive swings, but made me edgier than hell. And given my Dx, it wasn't like sleep was my friend much, either. Supplementing with Seroquel helped a lot. Stay away from Risperdal- I could tell you nightmarish stories of what it did to me...

Anyway- I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one online. Please do consult with yours- and be honest. Good luck, friend.

I'm an alcoholic who drank heavily through a year of 200mg of Zoloft. Nothing happened to me except it messed with my meds in the way that I had mood swings/anxiety from my drinking.

Now I'm on 30mg of Lexapro. I was also given Ativan (a benzo) for my anxiety/panic attacks since the Lexapro alone was not enough for me. My doctor specifically said that ONE drink will not kill me but that I can't drink excessively since it somewhat cancels out the anti-depressant effect of Lexapro and I may get a bit drowsy or drunk faster then I usually do. Because I was also given the Ativan she was adamant about how I shouldn't have more than the equivalent of 1 glass of wine. I went out and got wasted a couple of times anyway. Nothing happened to me

The third time I got drunk (on 20mg Lexapro, 1.5 mg Ativan), I had 2 bottles of champagne and a few beers (New Years). I blacked out and started a fight. I woke up the next day and I was shaking and had a mild seizure. I shook for 2 and a half days. I felt like I was dying. I told my doctor about it and she freaked out and said it was because of the Ativan that I was talking. Ativan CAUSES the DTs if you drink on it even though it's a drug used to treat DTs sometimes (weird, I know). I most likely would have been fine if I drank on the Lexapro alone.

Whatever, try not to drink if you can. It's sort of like drinking on antibiotics, it counteracts the medication. Also, alcohol makes anxiety worse in the long run even though you think it helps relieve the anxiety at the moment. I quit drinking because I couldn't deal with all the meds and alcohol mixing. My mental health is too important to me now. Plus I was also put on a mood stabilizer so now I'm on 3 meds. I have no business drinking.

BTW, I got addicted to the Ativan, so watch out if you get a perscription for that stuff. I take Klonopin now and have yet to have a problem with it. It's less addictive for me than the Ativan.

A couple of things. First, you may need to increase your medication. Lexapro is an SSRI (an antidepressant that regulates Serotonin). Usually higher dosages of SSRI's are needed to help reduce anxiety symptoms. You may be having panic attacks. Second, alcohol usage may exacerbate this condition, usually after the effect of the alcohol has worn off. Alcohol works very similarly to benzodiazepines (like Valium), so it may reduce anxiety initially, but is unreliable. Lexapro is generally not affected by mild alcohol usage, unless there are other problems with your liver or kidneys. Bottom line, you should be discussing this with your physician, and being followed by someone familiar with anxiety symptoms. Remember, it's your body. Good Luck

The literature on lexapro is not to drink alcoholic beverages with it. As with any medication it can adversely affect it. Actually it can potentate the effect of the beer making you drunk faster. Plus since alcohol is a depressant it doesn't help that either. Your best bet about alcohol consumption comes from you Dr.They may OK one now and then but they may also say with your personal illness it is not safe.

I take lexapro everyday and drink almost every weekend. No big thing. If I remember right, when I first started taking it I felt like a couple drinks affected me more than usual, but I no longer notice that difference.
