Approximately 58,000 Americans died in the Vietnam War.
I was there. The year I was there, about 48 Americans died everyday.
It was a war fought as a part of the cold war. We were told, and some believed that if Vietnam was surrendered to the communists, that Southeast Asia nations would all become communistic.
Much like the Iraq war, we were lied to from the beginning.
President Johnson got authority to wage the war from the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. That resolution was passed after American Naval forces reported being attacked on the "high seas" by North Vietnamese forces. There is now compelling reason to believe that such an attack never occurred.
We "jumped into the war with both feet" after that.
We won militarily, most of the battles, including Tet, but the growing death toll led to a huge backlash in this country.
Nixon won two elections based upon his "secret plan to end the war," and that plan was to declare victory and leave.
That war should have taught us something, but it, apparently did not.
A lot of Vietnam Vets are for the War in Iraq. I don't see how.

The French had been fighting in Vietnam for 20 years before they pulled out .
The US being afraid the commie's would expand their empire into Vietnam jumped in both feet
At no point did they consult the French about what jungle fighting was like or ask for opinions or help with strategy
The US could not fight on the ground do to dense jungle cover and got slaughtered left and right
They could not tell the difference between civilians and soldiers so they fire bombed villages and sprayed chemical weapons liberally
They discussed nuking the jungle to get rid of all those tree's
Finally in an admission of defeat they retreated
The average age of the US soldier was 19 years old most came back with Post traumatic stress disorder and a lot never found productive lives .
When they returned their own people did not welcome them or really acknowledge them at all
It was the first war shown on TV and was known as the living room was because it was on the news every night in peoples living room.
Those poor soldiers went in unprepared to young and with an impossible mission - and they did a hell of a job despite it all
They were treated badly over there by their government and by there fellow Americans when they got home

1. the peace movement basically kept the soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines from winning that fight. the main commie protestors were Jane Fonda, Joan Baez and a few more radical communist types of liberals...
2. we went to war cause the communists were threatening to defeat us militaryily and also to conquer all the world....starting with the undeveloped third world countries, eg. Vietnam. we were trying to stop the Chinese commies from going in Indonesia, Thailand, Austrailia and India.... see? Russians reds or commies were very aggressive as well and wanted to push their ideology on the world too... we felt that we had to stand up to them and fight them... we did in Korea a UN and US think...a tie... losses were 40K killed and Vietnam a loss due to the commie radical peace protesters here 60K dead....
3. anyway just be glad that you don't have to fight kid... go out there and do your thing and be glad for those poor slobs who died for your right to take drugs and get laid....

Yes I'm sure you'll get a good solid answer from some random person online in the small amount of writing they can do on here!
God forbid you use a search engine to actually look up some reliable info!

Johnson used it as a way to get votes for his social programs.
Ho Chi Min wanted help from us to get rid of the French, but we sided with the French and the South so we screwed ourselves.
We were told it was to stop the spread of Communism, but after we left, the Vietnamese killed more Communists (Chinese) that we ever did.
Johnson use false pretense into getting us into it....
...Maybe you want to call in sick, it was a long, complicated war and will take a little research on to do a decent paper.

The Peace movement was a major factor in ending the war in Vietnam.
A little over 50,000 US troops died in Vietnam.
Americans should have learned that a mostly conventional military like the US can't defeat an insurgency IF it's a Limited war just like today's Iraq.

What you want to know. I was there two times.
Email me on hotmail as louisianaman2 and if I can be convinced you are for real I will see what I can do. Be sure and include a/s/l. And if you are underage I will want your parents approval to do this. No parental approval no Vietnam help. Plain enough.
Be sure and be specific what you want to know

In a nutshell, the French dropped it in our lap, and the Democrats dropped on Nixon,s lap, and surrendered on his behalf , just like they are trying to do to Bush
Moral of the Story, Politicians don't make Good Military
