I am moving to a town that has a nissan dealership there and i want to try to get a job there and i was wondering what the best way to go about it was...my goal is to be a tech but seeing how i dont have any certifications or work related experience i dont know how thats going to happen, i dont know if they have an apprentice program or not and even if they do im sure the slots fill up fast. i spoke with a guy who said he did it by applying as a lube tech and within a few months he was working as a full time technician. thanks for your help.

The guy you talked to gave you good info. Without any training or certifications you'll need to start at the bottom and work your way up. General Service (lube tech) positions have a pretty high turnover rate and shouldn't be too hard to come across. To be a successful line mechanic takes years of experience and dedication to your line of work. Good luck.

The best way to get on at most dealerships is to be enrolled at your local tech or vacational school in an ASC certified program. In Atlanta, the dealerships seek out these interns and pay them for their work. They take the best of them and offer full-time positions once they graduate.

I personally know a full-time Infiniti tech who is a ASC, Nissan and Infiniti master tech with over 20 years experience. He'll make close to $100k this year and he never has to look for work.

Good Luck, it's worth the school time!

Many dealerships will offer apprentice programs. They send you to a training school for their brand and pay for it but you have to sign a contract saying you will work for them for a certain amount of time or repay them for the classes if you leave or are fired.

John is correct you will need tools and they are very expensive. Its hot in the summer and cold in the winter and you will probably make between $15-25/hr depending on company and experience. You could get a job in at an auto company or supplier and work in their test lab to get some experience which may help convince them that they should go through the work of giving you more training.

You have to go to school and get a associate degree. Please do not do it in the field of Auto Mechanics. Copier repairmen work in air conditioned buildings don't have to provide there own tools and drive company cars. Internet service people have 401K plans medical insurance and don't have to pay to launder there uniforms. I have worked over 30 years as a Foreign Auto Technician and I can tell you it is not any easier now. Besides having almost $100,000 in tools including this lap top and the largest Snap On collection in the shop. DON'T DO IT! UNLESS YOU LOVE IT. 100+ degree summers below 20 winters in Texas. Sweat and blood customers tears. The dealer makes 100 an hour and after 30 years I get 24 an hour? Buy my own health insurance and 1/2 of the uniform laundry and I buy between $800 and $3,200 a year tools yes that's for as long as you work. Yes if you loose a tool the customer finds they almost never bring them back.
