there is no legal way to avoid credit card debt, and the debt consolidation companies are the biggest, most terrible scam out there. dont worry about it, it is an unsecured debt, things like mortgages, car payments and student loans are the important ones, along with utilities and food.

the credit card collection calls are what is annoying. dont listen to what the collector say about suing 95% of the time they are full of it, i've worked for a bank's credit card collection dept for years and i've only seen a hand full of loans with litigation. and even then the balances were 100K + which i'm assuming is not the case here...

Change your name, move to a different location.
Your creditors will be chasing your former shadow for years.
Just remember that after changing your name, and start applying for new credit, do NOT give them your previous address where you accrued the debt, otherwise the likes of Experian and Equifax credit reference agencies will be able to join the dots and find you easily...never associate yourself with your previous self.
Small companies do this all the time, they go bankrupt and then open up in a new name with exactly the same staff...I know this for a fact, one of my relations was about to make a claim against a company that did some
major work on his house, they did a real bodge it and scarper job, when he went to sue them for a lot of money, they went broke and started up in another name with exactly the same staff.
This is all obviously illegal, so what, if the small companies can do it, then so why can't we all do it?

You borrowed the money from them fair and square, now you want a way to weasel out of paying them after they held up their end of the bargain?

Brandy's answer above is totally wrong. It is totally legal and appropriate for the credit card company to assign their contract rights to someone else. If Brandy was right, the economy would grind to a halt. The whole mortgage business is built on selling the mortgage to a group of bondholders.

If you don't have it, then you just don't pay. You can't get blood from a stone. They will write your account off (meaning the credit card companies will deduct your debt from their taxes as a liability) and will sell your account to a collection agency. A collection agency has no legal right to collect from you at all. You didn't create the debt with them. For example, I owed you $5, you got tired of waiting for me to pay you and sold your $5 debt with me to Johnny. Does Johnny now have the right to collect from me? Of course not. Once the original creditor writes off your debt on their taxes, they have no legal right to collect from you (since they will be collecting once from the federal govt because they reduced the amount of taxes they owed with your debt, and then collecting from you again).

Be careful. Credit is to be used, not abused.
