I would like to add Remote Desktop Connection functionality so I can control other machines on our home network (very lazy indeed!). Can I upgrade a XP Home edition to Professional if I have the CD?

Yes, it can be done. Purchase copy of the XP Pro CD and you're ready to go. Beware, you may lose some drivers that are needed for your machine. I was able to download nearly all of the drivers from the manufacturer of my laptop, except for the DVD encoder . . . set me back about $40.

You can upgrade XP Home to XP Professional in some circumstances. See Microsoft's link below.

You can use the Remote Desktop client from your XP Home to your XP Pro, just not the other way around.

You can't do that for free, unless you get a pirate version, which is a mess because of the Genuine tool of XP and the updates that you would need to counter. There are tools to counter those, but I'd save the trouble and just buy the thing.

Only if your XP Pro is retail or upgrade version, OEM ones wont allow upgrades.
